I’m hoping to relearn some of what I thought I knew about "health", gaining a perspective somewhat removed from my erstwhile clinical observation of individuals. To do this I need to study new subjects, fully engage with a new learning environment, take on the new adventure of commuting by public transport, and consider utilizing opportunities for extracurricular learning and activities. Different courses for different horses It’s 16 years since I last graduated from a university, and I’m at the beginning of an intensive postgraduate taught course that should lead, initially, to a Master of Public Health. Full-time study entails 2 days of direct teaching but most postgraduate education is self-directed (they say 3 hours of independent study for every hour taugh...

I don’t want any Safari!
From: bioneural.net
Post Date: 2008-03-25 01:50:05

Installation of software you didn’t actively choose to install is malware. I’m referring to Apple’s recent decision to force Safari 3.1 on hapless Windows users via Software Update. Having entered the world of geotagging I was disappointed to discover that iPhoto can fail to show coordinates in EXIF (and when shown, oddly lists them under Exposure), does not recognise location data in IPTC headers, and does not provide any "show on map" facility (even Preview does this). Support the Open Share Icon Project

A backlash in the face of threats from ShareThis.com / Nextumi Inc., owners of the trademarked Share Icon originally promoted as "generic", has prompted creation of the Open Share Icon Project —a free, open, community-driven alternative. The Share Icon has become synonymous with the commercial ShareThis brand & widget (registration terms ) & even the "Classic" plugin requires publishers to actively opt-out of "sharing" their data to the ShareThis service. The work... more
A break in the weather
From: bioneural.net
Post Date: 2008-04-06 04:19:38

Yesterday’s treacherous weather foiled our walking plans. We set out under blue and sunny skies, arriving at our departure point some 25 minutes later under a blanket of grey and chilling precipitation. We didn’t go far, returning to the car as the rain got heavier and then turned to sleet. We were safely home when it turned to hail, and then snow. Not to be thwarted this morning we were out the door before 0700h, but this time the skies co-operated and we enjoyed clear but crisp co... more
