You don’t hear much about the state of the internet in Africa, so we here at Pingdom decided to find out how Africa’s internet is doing. We looked at data traffic and internet penetration (how many in the population have internet access), and came up with some very interesting numbers. Bandwidth (traffic) Internet exchange points (IXPs) are locations where internet service providers (ISPs) interconnect so that they can send traffic directly to each other instead of having this traffic routed via other providers (and potentially very long distances), cutting traffic costs and increasing performance in the process. The IXP throughput can give us a good idea of how much internet traffic is being handled in Africa. IXP traffic in Africa Country Name City Peering ISPs Started Traffic Tanzania AIXP Arusha 14 2007 200 Kbps Angola ANG-IXP 5 2006 Unknown Botswana BINX Gabarone 8 2005 Unknown ...

Cape town car rental beats the heck out of taxi-chasing
From: diarelmanar.com

When visiting South Africa, it is always good to get a car. If you are on business and don’t want to mess with taxis, you could go to a cape town car rental office and get yourself a Mercedes.  Why not?  You drive around in style at home, so shouldn’t you be able to carry that over to your business trip to South Africa?  The rental office can provide you with the exact model of car you want, and it would truly be more economical and convenient to have your own car while in town in... more

We got this reply in our support inbox after having sent a customer a friendly email asking how things were going with his Pingdom account. He clearly got the gist of it, didn’t he? Uptime monitoring can reveal a lot, but we have never seen it boiled down to such a concise and to-the-point message before. You simply have to smile. In time for Easter we thought that we should list a few funny and geeky Easter eggs. Easter eggs in software don’t do anything good besides being funny which we of course like. So here we present a few selected ones that we think are funny. Mac OS X Leopard, Blue Screen of Death Start by connecting to a networked PC and then open finder. In the sidebar to the left an icon will be shown under Devices. The icon looks like an old CRT monitor with the well known Blue Screen of Death, if you wou... more
Apple Store status widget for Mac OS X

A month ago we released an Apple Store status banner that was powered by Pingdom’s uptime monitoring service. Anyone could put it on their website to show the US Apple Store status (up or down) in real time. The reason this is interesting is of course because Apple usually updates or releases new products in connection with taking down the Apple Store. It became a success and we got a lot of really positive feedback. One thing that people kept asking for was a widget for their... more
Apache dominates the top 100 websites, IIS still far behind
From: feeds.feedburner.com
Post Date: 2008-03-18 08:37:46

There has been a lot of talk about the decline of Apache’s dominance as a web server, with competition from IIS and other alternatives like Lighttpd, but Apache is still king of the hill when you look at the top 100 websites in the US. We here at Pingdom have noted a very wide range of web server software for the websites that we monitor uptime for. So, out of curiosity (once again) we decided to see what kind of web server software is in use by the most popular websites in the ... more
