Illinois town bans air conditioners in street-facing windows. Sorta’ sucks if you live in an apartment where the only window faces the street. “Splash and Dash,” whereby American taxpayers subsidize fuel manufactured and sold in other countries. Thank your subsidy-happy Corn Belt congressmen. Bruce Bartlett on the “Obamacon” phenomenon. Speaking of Obama, in an otherwise recommendable post on a troubling new family law case before the Supreme Court, Protein Wisdom’s JHoward weirdly and hack-tastically invokes Barack Obama. Because the case came out of Illinois. And Obama is from Illinois. See how that works? So the next time Phoenix Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s thugs harass reporters ? Totally John McCain’s fault! I think Lawrence Lessig gets the Alex Kozinski brouhaha just about right. What’s more, if I had to find a judge to decide if Miller v. California ought to be updated to reflect the digital age (and it ...

January 21, 2004, on Fox News’ "On the Record": McCain: "We Want Average Citizens To Contribute Small Amounts of Money… I’m For That.  I Think It’s A Great Thing." During an appearance on FOX’s "On The Record," McCain said, "I think it’s wonderful that Howard Dean was able to use the Internet, $50, $75, $100 contributions. That’s what we want it to be all about. We want average citizens to contribute small amounts of money, and that’s a ... more

Since you missed this part: "WILLIE NELSON AT ONE TIME 30 YEARS AGO WARNED ME ABOUT PEOPLE LIKE YOU" I missed that part. Were you smoking weed with him? By the way: When somebody asked Willie Nelson: "Are you supporting any particular candidate? I liked Dennis Kucinich, but he dropped out. Chicago gets tough on drugs: Tiny plastic bags used to sell small quantities of heroin, crack cocaine, marijuana and other drugs would be banned in Chicago, under a crackdown advanced Tuesday by a City Council committee. Ald. Robert Fioretti (2nd) persuaded the Health Committee to ban possession of “self-sealing plastic bags under two inches in either height or width,” after picking up 15 of the bags on a recent Sunday afternoon stroll through a West Side park. Obama vs. Hillary

My colleague Jacob Sullum notes that Republicans crossing over may have given Hillary her win in Texas last night.  That would seem to jibe with the tacit support she seems to be garnering on right-wing blogs. As I wrote several months ago, it would be really stupid for the Democrats to nominate her.  Obama will whip McCain.  Hillary may be the GOP’s last hope of retaining the White House. The other reason I think the pro-war right is flocking to Hillary is that, like President... more

The request asks for a copy of every autopsy embattled medical examiner Steven Hayne has performed on their behalf at Mississippi’s state crime lab facility in Jackson. Though Hayne is not a state employee, he began conducting his marathon, all-night autopsy sessions at the state facility a few years ago. In the 15 or so years... more

Not one , but two scandals this week. Be interesting to see how it affects the voting for David Hernandez or Amanda Overmeyer. On to the show. It was 80s night last night. My live-ish review: Luke Menard — Never sing a song that sent a contestant home early in previous years, particularly if you’re hanging by a thread yourself. Sang Wham’s “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go,” a really awful song that’s somehow fitting for this guy’s milquetoast on... more
