Why would someone write a page for a book with 236 other authors? Sounds like a mess doesn’t it? I don’t think so. I am contributing to the second edition of Age of Conversation , a collaborative book about practical uses and experiences in social media, spearheaded by Drew McLellan and Gavin Heaton . The first edition of the book was comprised of 103 authors, and the expansion for #2 indicates its success. The theme this time around is “Why Don’t People Get it?”, and though I don;t like to use the “get it/don;t get it” language around social media, I am happy to be included here. Sub-topics will include: My Marketing Tragedy, the Accidental Marketer, a New Brand of Creative, Moving from Conversation to Action, Keeping Secrets in the Age of Conversation, Manifestos, Business Model Evolution, and Life in the Conversation Lane. I have chosen to write for the last of these, so when the book is released at the end of the summer, ple...

This past Wednesday saw the release of “ The Age of Conversation 2: Why Don’t They Get It? ” Like the first AoC book, it is comprised of short essays from many authors (237 in this case, including yours truly’s modest contribution). The book is now available for purchase at http://stores.lulu.com/ageofconversation , with proceeds going to charity. Getting 237 people to write about social media and raise money for charoty? It’s not (just) an excuse for a bunch of u... more

I’ve just finished David Meerman Scott’s, New Rules of Marketing and PR (review to follow later this week hopefully) which I can strongly recommend to anyone. He recently spoke on a similar theme at the Inbound Marketing Summit - the video is below - with topics including blogging, video, news releases and ebooks. If you’re short [...] ... more

In what began as a mild dare, Gavin Heaton and Drew McLellan challenged bloggers around the world to contribute one page — 400 words — on the topic of “conversation.” The resulting book, The Age of Conversation 2 , brings together over 100 of the world’s leading marketers, writers, thinkers and creative innovators in a ground-breaking collection of essays about the value of dialogue in the world of marketing and idea-building. Do We Need Video as a Communications Tool? Bizarro Edition
From: feeds.feedburner.com
Post Date: 2008-03-06 19:39:43

This week, Media Bullseye published an article I wrote titled “ Do We Need Video as a Communications Tool ?” While far from comprehensive, the article has generated some response (mostly private as of this writing, rather than in comments). You can read the article over at Media Bullseye, but in essence i wanted to take all the myriad forms of online video, as they become more popular, and put them in their place as tools. You need a strategy before you need a video; if... more
Social Media Top 5: Calling a Foul on SXSW

This week, the SXSW interactive conference is going on down in Austin, Texas, and all the “cool kids” from social media are there. Except me. This Week’s Social Media Top 5 addresses this apparent injustice. 1) Why I’m not at SXSW 1: If Austin, Texas gets nuked over the next few days, I move up 155,732 spots on the succession chart and have a better shot at becoming the new King of Social Media (yah, yah, “Uneasy lies the crown,” blah b... more
Beginning training for the Pan Mass Challenge

I guess I can say I have officially started training for the Pan Mass Challenge ( http://www.pmc.org/ ) in August. The 160-mile bicycle ride across Massachusetts benefits the Jimmy Fund, helping research treatments and cures for cancer in children. For now I am biking indoors at the YMCA to keep in shape. It’s much harder to keep up the intensity here than on a real bike, but it’s a start. I am daunted by the ‘official’ training schedule, but I feel if ... more
Social Media Top 5: Cleaning up after SXSW Interactive

Time for the weekly Social Media Top 5, a collection of japes, jeers, jerks, and general thoughts about social media, real and imagined. 1) First up, the big buzz at SXSW Interactive this past week was the keynote, in which Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg was interviewed by BusinessWeek’s Sarah Lacy. Much of the crowd didn’t like how the interview went, and ended up revolting, expressing themselves vocally and through backchannels like Twitter . Judgements about the interv... more
