by Scott Schrantz In an act reminiscent of the grand regrades that shaped Seattle in the early 20th century, Carson City is in the process of removing an entire mountain. Except Carson’s project is taking place on a slightly smaller scale, and it isn’t happening right in the middle of downtown. All that’s happening is they’re removing the small hill next door to the Carson City airport. Now why they built the airport next to a hill in the first place is a mystery, but that hill has been quite the headache lately. When the wind blows it causes eddies of turbulence around the runways that can be hazardous to pilots. Also the runway has been squeezed in between the hill and a neighboring housing development, and a couple of planes have come down in backyards under the approach path. by Scott Schrantz Rehabilitation work on the old Wat*Mart building didn’t end with the demolition of the southern half. They’re still working on the remaining part of the building to convert it to a Burlington Coat Factory. Here you see work on making the facade larger. And here you see a couple of fellows inside working on the floor. And yep, the southern half is still demolished. Supposedly they’ll be starting on the Sportsman’s Warehouse soon. ... more

by Scott Schrantz Looks like the Record Courier is readying a redesign of their website . I wonder if this means the Nevada Appeal will be overhauled too? They’re both owned by the same company, and they both run the same underlying software. They’re basically identical sites right now, actually, along with the Tahoe Daily Tribune , Tahoe Bonanza , Sierra Sun , and Lahontan Valley News . The Tribune has also announced a redesign, so it looks like it’s system wide. ... more
