I kinda like Al Jazeera English. So much so that I download it on iTunes–subscription is free–to follow its news reports (the dominant US cable providers have been shy to carry it , though looking at its online viewer statistics, it certainly has a large potential TV audience stateside ). I am a big fan of “Inside Story” and the media analysis program “Listening Post.” And I like the way they make Africa into an ordinary continent. For those reasons I can even put up with Riz Khan and Jeff Hannas interview styles (it’s bad). But more recently they seem to be losing the plot somewhat and slipping. Take the new feature “Africa Uncovered.” I watched what appeared to the first episode a few days ago: a sensationalistic program on albinos in East Africa (it’s in two parts). I thought it was an aberration. Then I saw the “Africa Uncovered” episode on the “end of the rainbow in So...

When visiting South Africa, it is always good to get a car. If you are on business and don’t want to mess with taxis, you could go to a cape town car rental office and get yourself a Mercedes. Why not? You drive around in style at home, so shouldn’t you be able to carry that over to your business trip to South Africa? The rental office can provide you with the exact model of car you want, and it would truly be more economical and convenient to have your own car while in town in... more

Akon, the Senegalese-American musician, who styles himself as a ‘global’ political force of sorts, makes no sense in an interview in the March issue of the hip hop music and culture magazine, The Source :’  I really think that people in the State are spoiled. They can nag about the president all they want and how the system is against black people, but if they saw how other people lived [in Africa] they would see how blessed they really are. All the decisions they think ... more
Stores and restaurants in my neighborhood in Brooklyn seem to favor the son of a Kenyan economist and an anthropologist from Kansas (the polls suggest Hillary will take New York City though; and that goes for the ‘new’ immigrant vote  too, it seems).  I spotted this poster in the window of Madiba , the South African restaurant in Fort Greene.

‘A tall, gangling brown man from Cape Town, Dollar Brand sits with his head and body bent double over the keyboard, a posture which often makes him look like a conquering emperor taking off his boots. Indeed in South Africa during the proud seminal years of “underground jazz” Dollar Brand would almost inevitably appear on any stage in a pair of ungainly infantry boots which came in handy in after hour “joints” when arguments sometimes needed to be settled physi... more
