So my week off was just what the doctor ordered. Save for the techno dance remixes of Madonna hits , there’s really nothing to complain about. Ok, well, Heuston station was a bit of a nightmare on Saturday morning, because of some train stuck under some landslide or whatever. So, obviously, we spent a bit of the time in Dublin. I have a love/hate relationship with the capital city. Having studied and worked in Dublin for a number of years, it was definitely time to get out of it. But when you live in a small “city” like Waterford, where everything closes at 6 p.m. and nothing much happens, then the excitement and lure of the bright lights and muddy Liffey water becomes too alluring every so often… until about 4 p.m. and the city gets uncomfortably crowded again. Met with with three lovely ladies who blog , over two separate sociable occasions. Poor Certain Other Person might have been a bit boggled as to why the hell I was making him meet “pre...

The Ralf Little Show. Never heard of it? Me neither but there's a long clip from it on the Rock Profile DVD. He's interviewing David Walliams and Matt Lucas. It's astonishingly bad. He's such a poor, uncomfortable interviewer with no questions or banter. Luckily for him Walliams and Lucas are very talkative and pretty much conduct their own interview for him. I dread to think what he would be like up against a nervous or uncommunicative subject. ... more

Could I be anymore of a caricuture of my arid self? Last night; Saturday night; instead of ripping up some clubs, snorting cocaine off the left breast of a virgin, and flash my bits at waiting paparrazzi photographers, I opted instead for a looong soak in the bath, with music drifting in the bathroom door. I chose a single (but rather large) glass of ruby-red wine. I chose another 50 pages of my book. And after the soak; after my fingers turned from smooth supple digits to 90-year-old... more

I was just beginning to get some good vibes about ‘08. And then I go and discover that the most excellent Cathy Davey is playing Dublin on February 21st. As if that wasn’t enough, I then go and realise that the mesmerizing Devotchka are also playing Dublin on April 5th! What a frackin hoopla! So despite the fact that the bank balance is feeling a little bit thirsty for more moola, I’ve decided to kick off what I think will be a most excellent year for gigs in this... more

The Long Walk to Dachau.   Peace.   The Idiot and the Coat Men. Three chapters. Fairly short, each of them. Consecutive, too. I’ve been reading a book for what feels like forever. (This librarian is getting his reading mojo back in 08, if it kills him.) Until last night, about 80 pages from the end it was a good book. There was some beautiful writing: Soon there was nothing but scraps of words littered between her legs and all around her. The words. Why did t... more

Happy New Year to all. I hope everyone had a good Festive Season. Mine was quite great, actually. Bought myself a wee photo printer as a treat for being so good this year (”good at what?”), and I’ve been busy printing some photos that I took over the last year. Before I knew it, I had an entire picture of 2007 in, erm, well, pictures! The year started when Beth came to Waterford And discovered that there are some nice things about Waterford: ... more
