Scientists working at Arizona State University’s Laboratory for Algae Research & Biotechnology hope that tiny algae will be able to fuel jumbo jets. Now, their research is being spun-off as a $3 million research and commercialization collaboration between Heliae Development and Science Foundation Arizona to develop, produce and sell kerosene-based aviation fuel derived from algae. The researchers say they’ve already moved their work from the lab bench to a pilot-scale demonstration and production project. Led by Qiang Hu and Milton Sommerfeld, the research centers on specific algal strains that produce lots of fatty acids that, when de-oxygenated, are very similar to kerosene. The team says its process can produce kerosene cheaper from algae than from petroleum. With a few fuel additives, kerosene can be made into aviation fuel, and with this seed funding, the project will continue development of algal strains specifically for jet fuel at ASU’s new SkySong...

We brought you the news in late February that the ocean seeding startup Climos had raised its first funds, just a week after another controversial ocean seeding company Planktos had drowned under “anti-offset crusaders” . Well, on Tuesday Climos named its investors, which are none other than cleantech entrepreneur and Tesla Chairman Elon Musk, and Braemar Energy Ventures , which backed EnerNOC , one of the relatively few cleantech companies that made an exit. Climos says that th... more

Have biofuels been around long enough for there to be four generations of them? Those in the biofuel industry think so. Scientists at the University of Essex have discovered a new mechanism that regulates the process of carbon fixation in plants. The research, to be published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences , could lead to improvements in so-called “fourth-generation” biofuels by letting scientists design feedstocks that capture more carbon (hat... more

Now that we’re well into 2008, researchers have had ample time to look back to 2007 and determine which venture and private equity firms were responsible for the most clean energy investments. Numbers from New Energy Finance found that venture and private equity investments in clean energy grew 34 percent to $9.8 billion in 2007, with an interesting note that investors are returning to early-stage startups. And since we’re always suckers for Top 10 lists, we’re digging Ne... more
