This story about a Canadian woman who can set her water on fire is old news, but it caught my eye because the reason (as far as I can tell) that she can set her water on fire is because when the local oil company was drilling for natural gas nearby and they used a technique called hydraulic fracturing (often shortened to hydrofracing) to shake the oil loose from the geological formations underground. This is a technique that is often used with water production wells, as it forces a better connection between the well and the reservoir so more water can be drawn out. And they do say that the reason she can set her water on fire is because of naturally occurring methane. But what put the methane there? the hydrofracing did, as it broke down natural barriers between her drinking water aquifer and the zone that held the natural gases. So her well was accidentally impacted, which is No Good. But what really struck me about this story was reading it after hearing on...

Sustainable Sneakers
From: feeds.feedburner.com
Post Date: 2008-01-09 03:00:53

Jenn mentioned Nike in her post yesterday in the context of their reuse-a-shoe program, where they make tracks from old sneakers. Of course we all know that Nike is infamous for their poor labor practices. When I was hunting up information about their recycling program I stumbled upon the Nike responsibility page , which proudly touts that Nike has “evolved how [they] frame, define, and approach corporate responsibility.” The cynic in me thinks “heck yeah you have, Nik... more

From: feeds.feedburner.com
Post Date: 2008-01-08 03:00:53

Inspired by Karina’s post on collecting hard-to-recycle items, I’ve compiled a listing of various ways to recycle running shoes. Some programs are based in the United States and others are located overseas. Some programs have websites and/or email addresses for further information; many do not. Nearly all of the programs are small, volunteer-run organizations which pair up used-but-usable sneakers with runners who need them. Of course, an easy way to recycle sneakers is t... more

From: feeds.feedburner.com
Post Date: 2008-01-07 03:00:10
