When we took the time earlier in the week to compare Roger’s iPhone and BlackBerry voice and data rates, we were surprised at how well the iPhone 3G fared. Comparing AT&T’s iPhone and BlackBerry plans, however, we’re surprised by the similarities: unless you need visual voicemail, there is absolutely no difference between AT&T’s plans. This is actually bad news for 3G iPhone buyers, because it means that AT&T is now charging an extra $20 dollars for unlimited SMS — something that was free with iPhone 1.0. Sometimes parity isn’t so wonderful.

Gartner opened their 11th annual Mobile and Wireless Summit today by saying that phones are becoming less and less important, while platforms and services increase in value. Nick Jones, a distinguished analyst at Gartner, said that in the enterprise sector, BlackBerry will battle it out with Nokia and Windows Mobile — and, sometime down the road, Google’s Android — to offer more services and advertising. He created a chart comparing some of the top players’ strengths in ...

RIM has finally secured a toehold in Russia after a lot of wrangling with The Federal Security Service, the successor to the Soviet-era KGB. The FSB has been resistant to allowing the phones into Russia without first getting access to the codes RIM uses to encrypt data. An unidentified source told a Russian newspaper that RIM had refused to hand over the codes, so it’s unclear exactly what compromise was made. Regardless, Russian telecom Mobile TeleSystems will be importing 7,800 handsets,...

Remember that service pack for BES 4.1 that was due out soon? The one that was supposed to include HTML e-mail viewing? Well, it looks like we won’t be getting it as soon as we were hoping. The biggest hint that there will be a delay in the feature is a conspicuously absent bullet point from the the service pack 5’s feature list. It would be a damned shame to not make it in this service pack, considering rich text e-mail is so close to being ready for primetime. Of course, nobody wan...
