Back-ups are a good thing. Nay, a very good thing. Two years ago, I had an external hard drive fail and I lost all my music (including music I made myself), movies and thousands of pictures of my boys. We were able to get many of the images from relatives, Flickr and more, but I learned my lesson the hard way.
These days, I back up to the cloud. I use Mozy Home (now part of EMC) and for $4.95 a month I get unlimited online backups. Now my music, photos, videos, work stuff and more is backed up automatically and I don’t have to worry about it. Mozy has both Windows and Mac clients.
I blogged recently about backing your entire web root up to S3 , but maybe you don’t have the access or the knowledge to get that all set up.
If you’re using Wordpress to power your blog, this plugin may be right up your alley. It’s called the Wordpress Database Backup plugin and it pretty much does exactly what the name suggests. It backs up your Wo...

The Alexander Hotel Internet TheoremFrom: feeds.feedburner.com
Post Date: 2008-07-18 07:49:55
My friend and hero Bryan Alexander of NITLE has a theory that says, basically, the nicer the hotel you stay at, the worse the internet experience is, both in terms of connectivity options and price. I’ve stayed at a couple of lesser chains and their internet access has been great.
I was bummed to see that internet access at the EduWeb hotel is $12.95 a day. It looks like there will be a connection in the session areas, but at the end of a long day of sessions and networking, it...

We just wrapped up our EduWeb presentation on using the cloud in higher education, and at least from my perspective at the front of the room (and some on the sides and back of the room), things went well and hopefully people learned some new things.
Thank you to all the EduWeb attendees who stopped by and all the great Twitter folks who I’ve been able to get to know over the last few months.
If you weren’t able to attend our dog and pony show, I’ve posted our s...

Time to make your institution’s Knol page? From: feeds.feedburner.com
Post Date: 2008-07-25 06:11:54
I missed the launch due to being at EduWeb2008, but this past week, Google launched it’s Knol product.
I can’t tell if Google is trying to compete with Wikipedia here, with community contributions, a set of user-managed pages like Squidoo, or the human-powered search engine Mahalo.
Here’s an example of a Knol page. Knol pages include text, links, pictures, and in the case of this pancakes page, is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 License.
As a Kn...

EduWeb Wrap Up: Conference 2.0From: feeds.feedburner.com
Post Date: 2008-07-24 18:28:11
I’ve finally arrived home after 2 bad travel days and I had some time to think about the conference and what I learned there. For me personally, I think I got more out of the networking and just getting the chance to talk with colleagues from around the world that was awesome. The sessions themselves were ok - a little vendor heavy for my tastes, but that’s life.
I think our presentation went very well, and have gotten some great feedback from attendees on it, but the thing...
