Pinto notes two related problems with Blue Jays GM and, we were told, Billy Beane protege JP Ricciardi: first, the release of Frank Thomas has worked out badly , a move I thought questionable and badly-explained at the time and that Beane obviously recognized as a buying opportunity. ( H/T ). Second, Ricciardi has ripped Adam Dunn , questioning Dunn’s desire for the game and his low batting average, the kind of justifications that generally precede a team backing away from a player without an especially good reason for doing so. I can understand why you would not want nine guys like Dunn on your team. He does have some significant holes in his game. But like the caller Ricciardi was responding to said, the Blue Jays are not exactly overflowing with guys who produce Dunn’s kind of combination of power and patience - the team leader in HR has 8, Vernon Wells and Rod Barajas are the only guys slugging over .434, and Lyle Overbay’s the only guy on the tea...

Can-do optimism is always popular, and people have come to identify Obama with the ability to eli... more
Obama stumped on the trail again, and on a question McCain had handled previously . Of course, nuclear power is one of McCain’s pet causes , whereas Obama has been unclear on the concept before .
I was complaining the other day to some friends that these days, Obama seems to be aiming to wear down conservative bloggers by producing more material to beat him up with than any one person could possibly keep up with. He’s beginning to rival Kerry in that regard.

Mike Piazza, still unsigned, has decided to retire . Piazza could certainly still have been useful, if nothing else as a backup catcher, but obviously preferred not to end his career on that note. He’ll remember his years at Shea fondly:
"Within the eight years I spent in New York, I was able to take a different look at the game of baseball," Piazza said. "I wasn’t just a young kid that was wet behind the ears anymore - I was learning from other veteran guys like Johnny Franco,... more
