Conventional wisdom holds - and for good reason - that incumbent Representatives or Senators who have survived a few decent challenges will be better equipped to fend off further challenges in the future. On the face of it, this conventional wisdom makes sense. It seems logical that out of the candidates targeted for defeat by an opposing party, those who were superior campaigners would be the ones more likely to survive - and that, conversely, the weaker campaigners might be weeded out after a few cycles. It seems logical, too, that the incumbents who were better fits for their districts would tend to win reelection more often than those who were not. And it seems likely that an incumbent who has survived a couple of tough challenges may have learned how to handle them - the most effective advertising strategy in the district, how best to neutralize an opponent’s strength on key issues, etc. T hat said, this conventional wisdom is generally accepted for elect...

The flying spaghetti monster does not love me enough to let this happen:

A high-profile and highly costly state House race notable for its bizarre twists and turns — restraining orders requested and dropped, vows of celibacy — has taken a turn toward the ugly in the final days before Tuesday’s election.
First, a prominent moderate Republican in Eagle County fired off a letter to the Vail Daily late last month questioning the resume of Republican House District 56 candidate Ali Hasan , prompting Hasan to send in an equally pointed response to Don Coh... more
The Republicans, especially "independent" organizations like the National Republican Congressional Committee and Freedom’s Watch have been running very negative "gotcha" style ads in an attempt to smear Democrats in Congressional races across the country. Alabama’s 2nd District provides a textbook example of how the smear merchants do their dirty work. Typically, they use only a snippet of some statement by a Democrat. The video below illustrates the technique -- the first 7 seconds ... more
A report on Twin Cities-based KARE-11 news cites two independent sources who say that a new television ad from the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) darkens the skin tone of DFL congressional candidate Ashwin Madia (MN-03), who is of Asian Indian American background.

GOP ads in Minnesota
darken Democratic candidate’s skin .
Ashwin Madia, a former Marine and Iraq war veteran, is running as a
Democrat against Republican Erik Paulson to represent Minnesota’s third
congressional district. The National Republican Congressional Committee has
funded attack ads against Madia, who is Indian-American, that appear to have
darkened his skin from images used in Madia’s own ads.
Here’s one of the altered... more

Ullrich Fichtner at Der Spiegel writes: Why NATO Troops Can’t Deliver Peace in Afghanistan Good days are in short supply in Afghanistan, a country at war -- or involved in several wars, to be exact. There is constant fighting on many fronts, hard and soft. The newspapers, and there are many of them in Kabul now, serve up pages of chaotic images every day. Their reports are about bombs and drinking water, holy warriors and wheat prices, NATO air attacks and schoolbooks, kidna... more

(Promoted from the diaries by kos) I’m sorry. I simply can’t take some of what I’m hearing on cable news as they cover the Clinton win in Puerto Rico and continue to repeat Clinton campaign talking points in her "rationale" to secure the Democratic Presidential nomination. In the past three or four hours I have heard Harold Ickes, Terry McAuliffe, and Bill Schneider (CNN political analyst) repeatedly assert that Clinton is winning the popular vote... more
So the Chicago Cubs have the best record in baseball, while the Tampa Bay Rays have the second best (while leading the American League East). The Yankees have been hovering in and just barely out of last place. Hell hasn’t frozen over just yet. The season is less than 1/3rd of the way done. But global warming doesn’t appear to be having an impact in the netherworld. This is an open thread, but one in which trash talking about yodur favorite teams is particularly encour... more
