Austin bar patrons will consume thousands of bottles of beer and liquor this weekend, supporting local business and boosting Austin’s economy. At the same time, they may be adding layers to Texas landfills.
Even with growing environmental awareness and new city programs, some managers and owners of local watering holes have cited cost and convenience as their primary reasons for not recycling. But as the bottles and cans pile up, a growing number of environmental entrepreneurs have stepped in and tried to make the task easier and less expensive for businesses.
On the average Monday, $1 Lone Star night at Barton Springs Saloon on South Lamar Boulevard, the bar will go through about 288 bottles of Lone Star alone, said co-owner Jim LeMond. He said the saloon does not recycle because it’s difficult to find an affordable pickup service...
