About twenty years ago I made the prediction that Canada as such would cease to exist by 2020: Québec would have separated by then, and Alberta would have done so as well, either ahead of Québec or shortly after. The last few years, however, have led many to believe in a different outcome, with the independence movement in Québec losing steam, while Alberta has yet to come up with a credible and viable separatist movement or party of its own. Québecers have grown reasonably confident. Except for a hard core of sovereignists, who still think that theirs should be an independent country and that learning English is not important at all, today’s generation in la belle province is assuredly bilingual and does not worry about English Canada too much. On rare occasions, such as when Canada Post or, recently, the federal government in Ottawa publishes a calendar but forgets to include vital Québec holidays, French tempers flare up for a short while, only to subside again after...

As proof that I am part of the problem on this issue, I submit that I feel that the most interesting thing about the probable regime change in Canada is just how little interest Americans have shown in it thus far. Sure, Canada is goofy, but we only have two neighbors of note; you’d think we’d pay attention to who runs the place. Yet all of the following stories are receiving more attention in the American media right now, as measured by the headlines on my Google News home page: ... more

No smut please, we’re Canadian

It is a nasty world out there, isn’t it? The world is filled with smut and crime, and even when hard-working Canadians come home from work, they see more smut and crime and offensive behaviour on TV. Clearly, someone should put a stop to that. That someone may well be Charles McVety. He is Canada’s answer to Ned Flanders from The Simpsons and equally lives in a la-la-land of fundamentalist Christian beliefs. To McVety, who takes the Bible at face value – reason enough not to take h... more
What Albertans really, really want

The Spice Girls are about to finish their last world tour, but in Alberta, the “Spice Spirit” is very much alive. Leading up to the provincial election on March 3, Albertans have articulated what they really, really want from their future government. I’ll tell you what I want, what I really, really want: Affordable housing. Rent Controls. Voters have left no doubt that this is what they want. In fact, it is one of their biggest concerns. With an oil boom that has brought with it more ... more

It is official now: Canada, or at least its federal government, is beyond boring. The federal budget that has just been brought down by Stephen Harper’s Conservative government is a real snoozer. Finance minister Jim Flaherty has offered some interesting “carrots”, such as a new tax-free savings account, but all of it pales by comparison to British Columbia’s recent provincial budget , which, with its introduction of a revenue-neutral carbon tax, was truly remarkable and histor... more
