When Bill Kristol and others started advising the McCain campaign to run in opposition to the values and policies of pointy-headed elites, the obvious rejoinder was that if they started doing that, then they’d have to run against Bill Kristol, too. Well, it looks like those fancy-talking Harvard types have gotten their wish (via Memeorandum ): Awesome. To recap: Kristol tells Team McCain to go negative; Team McCain does just that ; the voters respond by booing them like Santa Claus at Veterans Stadium ; and then Kristol changes his tune and gets accused by a McCain spokeswoman of having “bought into the Obama campaign’s party line”. At this point, the only thing left is for Kristol and David Frum to face accusations of being unpatriotic . When that happens, I think we can rest quite happily in the knowledge that an ample heaping of deliciously poetic justice has been served. Posted in conservatism, media/culture, politics       ...

Via Yglesias , I see that  Bill Kristol wants to get his war on : And while [Bush is] at it, perhaps he could tell various admirals to stop moaning about how difficult it would be to deal with the pirates off the coast of Somalia (isn’t keeping the shipping lanes open a core mission of the Navy?) and order the Navy to clobber them. If need be, the Marines would no doubt be glad to recapitulate their origins and join in by going ashore in Africa to destroy the pirates’ safe havens. Sin... more

Romney Angles For 2012? From The New Republic Mike, I wonder how that Romney counterfactual, gloomy for conservatives, improves Mitt’s chances in 2012? Ever since he lost the GOP primary, Romney’s practically redefined the word “obsequious” vis-a-vis McCain. But he seems to feel there’s an opening now to gently suggest that a Romney ‘08 campaign wouldn’t have been such a Hindenburg. This week he took his first, timid step towards criticizing Te... more

From James Pethokoukis The Latest From Inside McCain HQ I just talked to one of my best Team McCain sources who told me that heading into today all the key battleground polls were moving hard and fast in their direction. The source, hardly a perma-optimist, thinks it will be a long night, but that McCain is going to win. So add this with the new Battleground poll (Obama +1.9 only) and the rising stock market… Interesting.. ... more

It’s a bit chilly outside, the NBA is on hiatus until Thursday (?!), and the rest of my family is sleeping, so I’ve been scouring the Web for polling data in support of the hope that my candidate of choice could end up impacting the presidential race. It turns out that they’re not that hard to come by. First, though, a few disclaimers: I am not an expert. This should go without saying, but I’ll say it again anyway. I am not an expert, not even kinda. I c... more

This is not the kind of thing you want to have said about you in the present political climate: In several interviews with media organizations Thursday night, the former White House press secretary hinted that he was strongly leaning toward the Illinois senator’s White House bid over his own party’s presumptive nominee. McClellan, a former White House official who has angered several Republicans this week for his scathing critique of the Bush Administration, said he hasn’t... more
