Welcome to this week’s Carnival of Investing.  We tried to do a themed carnival this week on Alternative Investments for the Individual Investor.  Given the short notice I think we did pretty well.  You be the judge.  On with the show! We start out the week with two pieces on Alternative Investments.  Yours truly submitted a blog with short explanations of many alternative investments.  You can find it here.   If you want to know what an equity neutral hedge fund is or what a pure alpha strategy is you can find answers in this piece. Abnormal Returns wrote an article on why there is demand for Alternative Investments and why the demand is likely to continue.  Here is the link:  http://abnormalreturns.wordpress.com/

Asset Class Correlation - When Things Go Bad
From: growyourfunds.com
Post Date: 2006-05-05 15:54:57

Regular readers know I’m a big advocate of asset diversification.  It helps protect you from the normal cycles of the economy.  But, sometimes, diversification breaks down.  In times of great economic trauma standard correlations break down and things become more correlated with each other, with correlations approaching one. What this means is that everything starts moving in the same direction.  The prices of all asset classes go down together with nothing moving up to offset the losses.... more
FX - Is Now The Time To Short The Dollar?
From: growyourfunds.com

There was an article in The Wall Street Journal on May 3rd titled, "Latest Advice On Wall Street: Buy Currencies."  Eleanor Laise writes that many big brokerage firms are advising their US Dollar based clients to add some other currencies their portfolios. So, do I agree?  In a word, yes.  The US has a large current account deficit.  While the US was one of the only major economies growing, other countries were happy to finance the deficit by buying our securities.  With 60 economies around the... more
Bear Market Forecast - Dennis the Bond Guy
From: growyourfunds.com
Post Date: 2006-05-03 16:57:33

I [my friend Dennis] was reading your blog and had a few thoughts I though I might share with you. Our increasing government debt and unbridled spending with the resultant cost of financing has to raise interest rates it isn’t a question of "if", it is just when and how much. Rising interest rates (7%-8% long bond) combined with declining purchasing power and rising prices will grind growth to a halt. Recession will follow. Two stalwarts of inflation are the reduct... more
Benchmarks
From: growyourfunds.com
Post Date: 2006-05-03 16:20:09

There was an article in the Wall Street Journal today on how lots of investors are beating the S&P 500 index over the last 5 years.  If you define the S&P 500 as the market, then you are beating the market.  But if your holdings are different than those in the index, then it might be the wrong measurement. What you have is a benchmark problem.  What do you measure yourself against?  How do you know if you or your portfolio manager is doing a good job?  This is actually one of the biggest questi... more
