From the GREAT STATE OF MAINE…
My Thoughts on the Republican Convention:
Republicans sure are angry people. They should take a class or something to get that under control. Or maybe just do what Jesus did: chill, man. - When John McCain chose Sarah Palin as his veep choice, she became an instant mega-celebrity, eclipsing even Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. Whoops! - The RNC would like to thank the fine folks at Crayola Color Wonder for the backdrops last night. Optometrists would like to thank the RNC for the influx of patients that streamed into their offices with retina burns this morning. - Republican operatives have officially welcomed 9/11 into their bag of acceptable advertising and marketing tools . The families of the victims must be thrilled to know that the horrific deaths of their loved ones can now be used to sell stuff. - If McCain doesn’t get a 15-point bounce, the convention will be repeated over and over until he does. - If we lose this...

I was a bit amused last week to see that Rob Haney , lately the chair of the Republicans in Legislative District 11, was ousted by former legislator Steve Tully . Haney has been waging a one man war against John McCain , which has included anti-McCain resolutions before the Republican State Committee and an interview on NPR where he criticized McCain for being too liberal.
According to one R-Cubed source within the Republican party, folks in the district club, some of whom supported Hane... more

So, putting aside the polls, I think it was politically beneficial
for McCain to control the agenda of the debate. I think that meant he
advanced his message more effectively than Obama. If McCain can manage
the agenda of the next two debates as well (a big if), the final effect
could be quite helpful to him. It will [...]

I'm about to head out to the airport. But I thought this might be worth throwing into the blog-o-matic. From a reader:Jonah,
K-Lo posted a link to a DE site on the Katie's restaurant thing. An eagle-eyed commentator there pointed out that CNN has changed the debate transcript to read: "Can I respond? Look, all you have to do is go down Union Street with me in Wilmington OR go to Katie's Restaurant or walk into Home Depot with me where I spend a lot of time..." (Emphasis ... more
Arbitrarily casting a vote for a presidential candidate from one of the two best known parties based on whether or not he’s expected to win would be like handing your ballot to the media or to McCain or Obama and letting them vote for you. We’ve just been majorly swindled by the government and Wall Street. Did your candidate act on this in a way that you find acceptable? This was no small issue. If McCain or Obama win this election, we will be represented in the White House in the s... more
The more I read about this Florida adoption case, the more appalled I am at the state’s position. The two children in this case are biological brothers from an astonishingly neglectful and abusive home. The Florida Department of Children and Families actually called the plaintiffs, a gay couple, and asked them to take in the two boys, who were respectively 4 years old and an infant at the time. The couple had been foster parents for children in the past, but they initially said no becaus... more

John Gulland, Director of the Wood Heat Policy Institute , notes that “the work involved in heating with wood is usually shared among family members. Everyone chips in to stack firewood, and managing the fire might be done by mom or dad, whoever is handy. The job of keeping the wood box full might be given to one of the kids. Once they’ve learned the ropes, teenagers are allowed to load the stove, as a sort of right of passage.”
I wish I had thought of that—giving the kids the jo... more
On- and off-blog responses tell me I’m not the only one who enjoys hearing from that chap in London, Rodney. So I’ve invited him to guest-post from time to time, and he’s agreed. For starters, he’s taken as his text a certain pesky website . . .
You may have heard of Wikileaks. (No, it’s not Joe the Plumber’s imaginary business, nor is it an embarrassing 3 am syndrome suffered by Jimbo Wales.)

Yesterday, I noted an AP story on the recent contempt of Congress vote that, well… had a few problems.
In the least troubling of the errors, the reporter — Laurie Kellman — misidentified Rep. Jon Porter (R-NV) as a Democrat.
OK, not such an awful mistake. At least, not by itself. And the AP’s Director of Media Relations, Paul Colford, e-mailed to point out that the AP had in fact already put out a corrected version of the article.
But Kellman didn’t... more

Tonight’s schedule, with pledged delegates in parenthesis):
Vermont (15), 7 p.m. ET
Ohio (141), 7:30 p.m. ET
Rhode Island (21) 9 p.m. ET
Texas (193) 9 p.m. ET, but El Paso is in a different time zone, so closes an hour later. And, to make things extra complicated, the caucuses begin after the polls close.
Vermont will get called quickly for Obama. The rest should take a while to report winners. And Texas, sheesh, that one will be conf... more
The Obama campaign may be planning ahead (something the Clinton campaign never thought of, apparently), but it’s clear that they’re also paving the way for a serious push to knock Clinton out of the race this week.
First off is the developing CW , from the very astute Charlie Cook:
NBC political analyst Charlie Cook writes in his CongressDaily column, “[W]inning by slight percentages in Texas and Ohio aren’t real wins for Clinton. A ‘win’ would... more
