As Evan Wroten of Interact Public Safety says in the article, the key lies with gaining a firm understanding of the licensing model the vendor operates under, and making sure you understand the value proposition and flexibility that comes along with owning the source code…because while open source might seem like a radical alternative to the proprietary model, it really isn’...

The open source concept confounds a lot of people. When I explain the SugarCRM manufacturing model, I often hear non-tech types ask me questions like “So, wait, these guys just test your product and track bugs, for free?” It is odd, I guess, when you think about it. But the nice people at Psychology Today were not happy to just say “hey some people like coding.” Instead, they are looking deeper into the psychology behind open source and open wiki contributors. Dave Rosenberg eluded to an interview in his blog yesterday that he conducted with Matt Asay and Daniel Lyons during this week’s episode of Open Season. For those of you not familiar with Lyons, he is a senior editor with Forbes magazine, and otherwise known by his alter ego, Fake Steve Jobs, thanks to his blog about everything and anything that involves Silicon Valley. The broadcast caught my attention due to the fact that Lyons was SugarCRM’s keynote speaker at our annual conference last m... more

I just wanted to weigh in for a second on Facebook, and its luring Sheryl Sandberg away from Google. I think it’s a good idea. I have a lot of respect for what Zuckerberg has done so far. But Facebook is at a very critical point - and as a CRM analyst at heart, I think the consumer experience is borderline horrible. Google made its fortunes, in an indirect way, by being so simple that anyone could use the search features. It is still true to its roots and every thing Google puts out has so... more

I’ve been checking out Ostatic - it’s definitely in in infancy, but I think it has some potential. While there are a lot of great views in the blogosphere around open source software, this blog is dedicated to actually making some of this software available at its site, and allowing  visitors to comment and collaborate around these projects. Sure, there is some idea sharing at SourceForge.org, and of course the commentary found surrounding some of the better OS bloggers like Matt As... more
