Let’s make July the month the trade union workers work safe by working smart. Starting in July we are going to cover accidents, safety equipment, the law, OSHA rules and regulations and some aspects of construction sites. Over the last 27 years my clients have overcome general contractors who refuse to set the job site up right or to control what goes on. The supervisors have ignored foreman’s refusal to follow adopted job site safety rules and some job site environments seem to operate without regard to recognized safety rules. We’re talking about simple things like everyone has to wear a hard hat or steel toed boots or the use of fall protection equipment. Now I’m not saying everything is perfect or has to be perfect. Construction is tough and dangerous work performed by laborers from many different labor trades. You’ve got crane operators and those signaling the crane operator. In 2007, 423 people died in all traffic accidents according to the Iowa DOT. As compared with 439 in 2006 and 450 in 2005. More statistics are coming in having to do with seatbelt usage, alcohol relatedness, motorcycle and deer wrecks and collisions, etc. We’ll report on more later. Happy New Year!...
