Nod to Wrigleyville for the link : According to Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press, "the Tigers have had general discussions with the Chicago Cubs about acquiring bullpen help."  Detroit’s pen has dealt with all kinds of injuries this year. Morosi implies that Brandon Inge could be a fit for the Cubs if he could prove a capable center fielder.  Seems a long shot though.  In any case, Ryan Dempster could be a possible fit for Detroit.  He’s set to earn a hefty $5.5MM this year and doesn’t seem to have a clear place on the Cubs’ staff.  Neither does Jason Marquis, but he’s not what the Tigers need. I propse we give them Dempster and throw in Marquis for free. Maybe they could learn to love him.

Dempster the next Stevie Ire? From the Trib: Well, this is really getting interesting now. Cubs manager Lou Piniella disputed Ryan Dempster’s comment that the team "underestimated how prepared you have to be" entering its best-of-five playoff series against the Dodgers. "Look, the team was prepared," Piniella told WMVP-AM 1000’s "Waddle and Silvy Show" on Wednesday. Though likely unintended, Dempster’s statement reflected poorly on Piniella, who as manag... more

These are based on CHONE projections for an average team, and 4.84 million per win above replacement. Replacement level is set at a 4.55 ERA for relievers and a run higher than that for starters, in a league with an average ERA of 4.43. I’ll show the projected ERA, innings pitched, one year value, and 3 year value. For the 3 year value, the projection is advanced by the appropriate aging factors, an assumption that $ per win keeps rising 10% per year, and that expected innings drop 10% ... more

Lou Piniella and Jim Hendry spent time on different radio programs Wednesday, of course talking everything Cubs. Piniella joined Waddle and Silvy on ESPN 1000 in the morning while Hendry was on the Show (XM Radio) with Rob Dibble and Brian Webber in the afternoon. Paul Sullivan mentioned several of the main points from Piniella’s time on ESPN 1000 in the Tribune . Nearly two months after completely melting down in the first round of the playoffs, Lou Piniella took some shots at his team during a radio appearance on Wednesday, saying of his lineup, “It’s right-handed, it’s power-hitting and it’s not very quick.” Wait, Lou, isn’t this somewhat fast left-handed hitter in your lineup?: Piniella isn’t exactly hiding his disdain for Kosuke Fukudome these days. He’s also not entirely pleased with the r... more

See? I’m not ALWAYS eating. Sometimes I just sit in a chair. Today the newly-vegetarian Prince Fielder and the Northern Beer Team roll into Mesa for an afternoon dustup with the Cubs. But before we get to the game: a contest. As you all well know, yesterday the Cinncinnati Reds, in a move that can only be described as a double pile-driver to Reds fans, signed both Corey Patterson and Jerry Hairston, Jr. to minor league deals. What’s more, the Reds signed b... more

Spring Training Game Thread: Cubs at Diamondbacks, 3:05 p.m. CT/2:05 ET
From: feeds.feedburner.com
Post Date: 2008-03-05 10:00:00

The last time the Cubs and Diamondbacks squared off, it was not good. Arizona swept the Cubs right out of the playoffs, turning 162 games of hard work into three games of sucky baseball. Wrigley Field only got one game of playoff baseball, and it was not a good one. So just like that, the season was over, leaving Cubs fans empty and having to console each other with man-love. There, there, guy. It’ll be OK. Now? Payback time, bitches, spring-training style. Carlos ... more
