As the anti-Obama, anti-Democrat rhetoric of the right becomes increasingly shrill, it's worth asking why Republicans, having demonstrated a complete inability to govern responsibly, are so shocked to learn that they now reside on the fringes of mainstream thought. Two perspectives today provide some insight. Anthony DiMaggio points out that "right-wing conservatives and Republican political leaders" view themselves as "the legitimate rulers of the United States and the world." This basic contempt for anything but one-party rule is manifested in a number of dire threats repeated by the party, with its members promising the end of Western civilization as we know it if they lose their dominant status in government. [more ...] The Democrats' attempt to appeal across party lines has clearly not been the preferred tactic of the Republican Party. Angry over their likely loss of power in the upcoming election, they have become increasingly desperate in their attacks on...

In an exclusive interview today at the Washington Times former Maryland Lieutenant Governor and GOPAC Chairman Michael Steele vowed to transform the Republican Party if elected RNC Chairman. He also talked about how the Republican Party has been left "standing still" by the Democrats when it comes to the use of technology and outreach to young and minority voters. True. Steele also discusses his Pro-Life position in this interview.

As Republicans sort out the reasons for their defeat, they likely will overlook or dismiss the gorilla in the pulpit.
Three little letters, great big problem: G-O-D.

To be more specific, the evangelical, right-wing, oogedy-boogedy branch of the GOP is what ails the erstwhile conservative party and will continue to afflict and marginalize its constituents if r... more

The Ohio Republican Party has escalated its attacks on democracy on two key fronts.
It's trying to steal a hotly contested Congressional seat. And it's moving to restrict voting rights for coming elections.
In the bitterly embattled House race in central Ohio's 15th Congressional District, Republican State Senator Steve Stivers has a slight lead over Franklin County Commissioner Mary Jo Kilroy.
Two years ago, Kilroy essentially def... more
When Republicans are a major cause of the economic crisis with through regulation-free markets and the long term costs of war, the Republicans cannot run on their record. Even on the state level, led by the veto-pen Republican governor, Republicans blocked interventions to fix foreclosure problems, starved education funding, and traded low cost transportation maintenance into high cost replacement. Even Republicans are realizing that tax reductions are no help when the economy is tanking becaus... more
“The Republican Bail-out Plan is like insurance for a dead man”

Â
I have found no information on-line on the specifics of the Republican alternative bail-out plan, what I was able to do was watch a press conference held by the Republican House Caucus a few minutes ago.
Â
What they said in general was that they were going to offer a freemarket solution:

Offer government backed insurance policies for the mortgages held by fi... more
I wonder what they’ll discuss. In related news, Pelosi has responded : "We delivered on our end of the bargain...but the legislation has failed. The Republican caucus has not gotten the message. The crisis remains."
Update : Bushie says, "We put forth a plan that was big because we got a big problem...we’re going to attack this head on." ... more
I haven’t changed my opinion that a rescue of the housing and credit markets is crucial, but in the wake of Monday’s failed vote on the bailout bill, it’s time for a new strategy. The Republicans have made it clear that they’re uninterested in helping with the bailout, so it’s time for Democrats to pass their own bill. Instead of toeing the line on a Bush administration bill that none of the Democrats really liked, they should craft a new bill that will be more p... more
I’m just getting ready to head down to the first day of the Defending the American Dream summit, but a reader emailed this and I think it’s an astute analysis:
I was just wondering whether you happened to know what the over/under was on the length of time Obama and his congress will blame bush if they take power?
I’m certain that within the first couple of weeks we’ll here “Oh deary me, Bush hid how bad things were so I can’t give the 95% of you ... more
Very well-said. Well-worth reading. This describes the core of the American political circus in very clear terms. Rare for me to read an article with which I agree so much. ABN

I am amazed at how many of you have been sending me messages about the elections, most of them telling me how bad McCain is, and the rest campaigning for Obama as if he was the second coming. I've been trying to figure out why this is. Neither candidate is proposing to end our policy of military... more

The End Is Just The Beginning
People vastly smarter than me say that the Paulson bailout plan
is a necessity to prevent a market meltdown.
I trust these people.
But I also know that people smarter than me got us into this
mess and the Democrats will not allow us out of this mess without
creating another mess of some sort down the road.
I have no bone to pick with those who support this plan. I
understand and go into this with eyes wide open that doing nothing

EXCERPTS: . . . You know it’s bad when the scruffy-scragglies seem to make more sense than our political leaders. The Sunday Washington Post showed one demonstrator at a Wall Street Saturday protest against the financial bailout. The young gent was holding a sign that said in part, “No Banker Left Behind.”

Did the Democrats ever expect to actually support the bailout? Earlier I deemed Pelosi as a failure for failing to know that she was not going to get but a plurality of her party to support the flawed bailout bill. Yet, as I think about the way that the Democrats have conducted themselves since Paulson announced his plan I am beginning to suspect that the Democrats did just what they set out to do.
The media pressure has been from the very beginning against the GOP. Some pundits th... more
The LA Times reports on Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's leadership style and follow-through , based on interviews of individuals involved in Alaskan politics and Government. While she's praised for some things, she's raked up criticism in many areas. Key points those interviewed made: She often failed to follow through on her initiatives, including ethics reform. Yet a strange thing happened on the ethics issue once Palin became governor: She appeared to lose interest in comp... more

Gov. Sarah Palin is dividing the country. The airwaves are filled with those who can see past McCain's cheap ploy to get his campaign moving. McCain put his desire to be President above the best interests of our country. He deserves to lose. Aside from all the reasons Palin is a danger to the country because of her lack of qualifications remotely relevant to any high national office, from foreign policy to education to the economy to social security to health care, there's he... more
Michael Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told Congress today we are not winning in Afghanistan. Mullen and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates appeared before the House Armed Services Committee a day after President Bush announced that the U.S. would increase its presence in Afghanistan by 1,500 troops. Gates, who focused on Iraq, told the committee he thought that the U.S. strategy in Iraq has "entered that end game." Their testimony was a public airing of a discu... more
