There’s a story I’d been itching to write about the Democratic national Convention ever since Obama’s astonishing and powerful speech there last week. I think some of it is in this New Yorker piece by Hendrik Hertzberg, but there’s more to it.
You will remember that the story going in to the Convention was that of a party divided. The wounds of the Democratic primary for some 27% of Hillaryland remained undressed, and terms like "PUMA" and "discontent", dominated interviews. As the Delegates began to arrive in the Mile High and anticipation began to rise, it was puzzling to me that Obama would give two of four full days to Bill and Hillary. The media narrative echoed with ill portents of floor fights or the dangerous chance that a begrudging, unvetted speech by the Clintons could cost Obama the election.

A new biography, Michelle by Washington Post reporter Liza Mundy , examines Michelle’s years at the elite university, in particular Obama’s senior thesis, “Princeton-Educated Blacks and the Black Community.”
“The question of what upper-income blacks owe to the less fortunate was a major preoccupation,” Mundy writes. Michelle Obama grew up here as the daughter of a city worker who provided a modest middle-class lifestyle for Michelle, his wife and... more
I know everyone is going to think I am making this up, and since I can’t go into detail on my source for this information without getting someone in very, very bad trouble, I’m just going to have to accept that. But this is the goods, guys. This is straight up.
Michelle Obama has fleas. No kidding. Her "condition" is generally known throughout her campaign team and has caused problems with cleanup in hotel suites, in TV studios after appearances, and on buses and planes.... more

Very reliable sources have indicated that Governor Kaine is about to make a major mistake endorse Gerry Connolly in the 11th.
This, of course, would be a major mistake since Gerry is far from the best option - Leslie Byrne is a far better choice to represent the 11th. And she has experience (with it seniority) in that very job. See Lowell’s Top 10 Reasons to Vote for Leslie if you need a refresher.
As for Connolly, obviously the Governor needs a go... more

Doctors for the Massachusetts Democrat said tests conducted after Kennedy suffered a seizure this weekend show a tumor in his left parietal lobe. His treatment will be decided after more tests but the usual course includes combinations of radiation and chemotherapy. The senator, 76, has been hospitalized in Boston since Saturday, when he was airlifted from Cape Cod aft... more
Over at The Nation , Katrina Vanden Heuvel has some thoughts about Jim Webb:
Jim Webb can make the Four Seasons seem like a diner in Owensboro, Kentucky. It’s that kind of blue-collar street cred that may be just what it takes to propel the first term Senator from Virginia onto the Democratic ticket as Vice-President.

When asked if he’d consider being a Vice-Presidential candidate on an Obama ticket, Webb’s non-reply--" I like being a Senator" -- --s... more
