Stowe Boyd has a fascinating post about how he sees the changing blog landscape. It’s a fairly technical piece but essentially he is suggesting that with the advent of ‘flow’ style applications like Twitter , the ‘conversations’ we’ve been having in blogs (which are effectively locked in silos) is now under the control of those who are commenting.  What that means is that conversations move away into other (sort of) silos and so the ability of the blog owner to fully monetize becomes a lot more difficult. I kinda but kinda not buy that part of his argument. For example, I have a FriendFeed addition to this site that shows what people are saying about blog posts here. It’s below the comments section. What’s interesting is that the conversations are not lost per se but they now ‘reside’ somewhere that’s more convenient for readers who might otherwise come here. In addition, I have a plug in tha...

One of the most consistently annoying and time-consuming tasks for the average business person is scheduling meeting times. Whether face-to-face or via phone, the slippery problem of pinning down a time for a meeting is painful, even if only two people are involved, and when a large group is involved days may pass -- and dozens of emails sent -- before a quorum emerges. In my case -- as a soloist working with dozens of clients and organizations (program committee and advisory board meetings ... more

Do you blog? If your answer is “No”, start blogging today, because if you’re a freelance writer and your name doesn’t show up in Google, your credibility is zero. Here’s how to get the most from your blog. There’s more to blogging than you think. Forget considering your blog an online journal: your blog is a professional tool. Ending the Zero Sum Game
From: accmanpro.com
Post Date: 2007-06-01 18:19:06

Anyone who looks at the tech industry will know that much of the rhetoric sounds like a zero sum game - I win, you lose. I’ve always felt uncomfortable about this as a model because it has the effect of shutting out the innovator. So when I see the conversation between Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple and Microsoft’s Bill Gates , I see a proxy for the co-opetition model which marks out the future of application delivery. How the heck Walt Mossberg managed to get these two guys togeth... more

If you remember the Frankie Goes To Hollywood single of the same name as the title you’ll also know it was a proxy for the old Cold War. Today, Frank aka The Gadget Guy has a wonderful clip of Bill Gates and Steve jobs discussing the early history of personal computing. If, like me, you grew up in that era you will know this is way more than kumbaya. This is a watershed. The IT industry is changing in radical ways that will (and are) impacting our lives in less than subtle... more
The human mashup and a Nokia N95

In one of his posts, Thomas Otter describes me as: ..the human mashup: half curmugedeon-half gadget freak I laughed. It’s true. Much of today has been spent either playing with my latest toy or flipping over to the compliance conversations . My toy? The utterly gorgeous Nokia N95 . I struck a deal of which VInnie would be proud - but still tell me he could have done a better deal. I bought the toy over e-Bay because shop prices for network free devices in Spain are ridic... more
Let’s talk governance, risk and compliance - kerrching.

The last days have seen fierce debate among some of my colleagues around the area of governance, risk and compliance or GRC in SAP-speak . The discussion came about following a long piece James Governor wrote (SAP is one of Redmonk’s clients) which basically parroted what he was told by Amit Chatterjee and others and then spun it as a ‘new’ thing. James piece was followed by a light hearted dig by Vinnie Mirchandani who wonders whether SAP is going into the insu... more
