I have just bought a new HP mini running Linux Enterprise 10.
I have never used Linux before so don’t know what to expect, but there seems to be no on-screen option to either Shut Down or Reboot.
If I click on the shut down "button" it puts up a window offering me only the two options of Sleep or Hibernate.
Am I missing something, or is Hibernate the same as Shut Down in, ahem, certain other operating systems? It appears to switch off, but I am not convinced it is closing down prop... more

Slatterz writes “Red Hat will announce its first high-performance computing optimised distro, Red Hat HPC, on 7 October. The distro is a step forward from the current Red Hat Enterprise Linux for HPC Compute Nodes. A part of the new distro is, by the way, created by a small Project Kusu team in Singapore. Kusu is the foundation for Platform Open Cluster Stack (OCS) which is an integral feature of Red Hat HPC. It might be sign of things to come, as more of hardware and software dev... more

The two-year anniversary of the Novell-Microsoft alliance that scandalized the open source community passed quietly enough earlier this month.
The pair waited a couple of weeks to mark the occasion and then said that in the second year of their arrangement they added upwards of 200 new joint customers, including BP Oil International and China Mobile, which are getting certificates from Microsoft for three-year priority support subscriptions to Novell’s SUSE Linux Enterprise Server.

EMusic is a pretty nice website, but the Linux client sucks donkey nuts, and won’t even run on a decently recent system. I did however appreciate the 25 free songs, as well as the nice electronic music catalogue (the whole of Basement Jaxx, and bits from Armand Van Helden, Freestylers, etc.). But I don’t really like being charged when I don’t use a service.

Well, I recently decided to move my blog and related content, to a personal domain. I’ve been searching for domain names to use for

most of the other names I came up with were taken in at least the .com domain.
I’m surprised that wayofthemonkey was available in any of them, let alone all
three. I&r... more
Sound Juicer "Don’t Blow Those Brains Yet" 2.15.5.1 is out.
Tarballs are available on

Radical change of plans for the www.gnome.org revamp since the previous approach wasn’t sustainable. Now we are proceeding with the usual web development planning stages in order to build a common vision: goals, scope, use cases, policies... This way the steps are slower but they hopefully will lead to a release as good as the GNOME desktop.
The development timeline has been updated with a bunch of goals being dropped from the 2.16 release. For a detailed schedule, check the cool H... more
