Son of Lee Kuan Yew, Hsien Yang (pictured right) has been in the news recently. When he quit as head honcho of Singtel, there was much speculation on where he was heading. Soon, it was let known he was to join local soft-drink company (with fingers in many other diversified businesses) as million-dollar non-exec chairperson.
Today, he made it into the Straits Times, but for other reasons. The papers announced that his mother-in-law and sister-in-law had bought an apartment that was being built by F&N. I suppose that F&N had filed this news with the Singapore stock exchange to inform them that Lee, chairman of F&N (and who oversaw the development of the apartments) had relatives who had bought an apartment there without discount or favours, so that the shareholders remain happy.
I applaud this kind of transparency. Shareholders have a right to know that the people in charge of a company are not using their power/influence to benefit their relatives. Thi...

In a line of government rhetoric that has already gone stale, Senior Minister Goh CT (pictured right) said that “…despite Singapore accumulating S$6.4 billion in reserves last year, the country should not dip unnecessarily into the reserves…” (see http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/329380/1/.html ).
Ah, I’m sure he was misquoted. I’m sure what he meant to say was that “…the country should not dip u... more
Things are hotting up in Malaysia. An election (or ‘erection’ as Info Minister Zam would say) is upon them, and this time, Malaysians would be voting more than just for policies.
In the past few months, all the major parties in the coalition Barisan Nasional have been tainted by incident after incident. The Malaysian Chinese Congress took a ‘blow’ when their very healthy Health Minster Chua had to resign after x-rated videos of he and his special friend were... more

Haha, after years of having these ERP gantries all over Singapore, our million dollar scholars have come up with another ‘better’ scheme to improve smooth-flowing roads. Each car will be fitted with a GPS system as early as 2010 to track how many kilometers of roads you use, and whether they are crowded/uncrowded ones, and charge each vehicle accordingly. On the outset, vehicles who drive longer distances, and those who use congested roads, will pay more than those that do... more
Sarawak is usually in the news for ‘eco’ reasons - things to do with ‘ecology’ like some scientist finding a new creature, or land being logged illegally, or tribal communities being forced to move for major projects that take away their lands.
Now, Sarawak is in the news for all the above reasons, all at the same time. The Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) will be launched next week. SCORE is an ambitious long-term development master plan encompas... more
