I was reading this OStatic interview with Ken Drachnik , marketing manager for open source software infrastructure products at Sun and a co-founder of GlassFish (Sun’s open-source application server), and it made me wonder if it’s time for some consolidation in the open-source stack. Yes, I’m the one who argues against consolidation in enterprise software , but another part of me wonders why we spend time reinventing wheels…. Yes, we have de facto winners in most software categories: SugarCRM in CRM, JBoss in application servers in enterprise adoption (with Tomcat winning out for unpaid deployments), MySQL in the database market, etc. Think of how much better these projects would be if we concentrated development on these, rather than creating a range of lightly developed and even more lightly used open-source alternatives. I guess my underlying question is, “Do we need a myriad of open-source alternatives to the proprietary sof...

Democratic bill could force Apple, AT&T to unlock iPhone
From: gafno.com
Post Date: 2008-02-26 17:18:00

When T-Mobile began selling Apple’s iPhone in Germany last fall, a legal skirmish ensued, forcing the wireless carrier to sell it untethered to a contract–at $1,460, no less. T-Mobile eventually persuaded a court that the two-year contract was legal. Now that same kind of European rule would be imported into the United States — meaning AT&T would be legally required to sell a contract-free iPhone — if a new Democratic proposal in the U.S. House of Representati... more
Yahoo open search: Good for users, but great for Yahoo
From: gafno.com

At the SMX West conference today, Yahoo is making a big deal of its new open search initiative. This program, not yet live, will allow site publishers to influence the way the Yahoo search engine displays results for their sites. The idea is to get structured data into search results. For example, if you search for product, and one of the results is a CNET review, open search will know that CNET reviews contain numerical ratings and will display that number in an easy-to-read format. ... more
Has Apple found the magic Touch?
From: gafno.com
Post Date: 2008-02-26 16:52:00

Apple is betting that the iPhone’s breakthrough in the way we interact with mobile phones will transfer over to notebooks. The new MacBook Pros and MacBooks introduced Tuesday aren’t all that much different from the ones that were on sale yesterday. Sure, they’ve got Intel’s new Penryn chips , and more potent configurations, but for the most part, it’s the same laptop. That is, with one notable exception. Apple brought the gesture-recognition technology firs... more
Apple releases new iPhone firmware
From: gafno.com
Post Date: 2008-02-26 16:25:00

It’s not a software development kit, but there is something new today for iPhone owners. Apple released OS X firmware update 1.1.4 Tuesday for the iPhone, saying little about the new features. The last update, 1.1.3 , introduced a few new capabilities such as the ability to customize the home page, but the only thing noted as new in 1.1.4 are “bug fixes,” which are probably welcome. A new firmware update for the iPhone is out with bug fixes, according to Apple. (... more
