Rookie offensive lineman Calvin Armstrong didn’t seem too concerned Thursday about the monstrous task he faces tonight when the Edmonton Eskimos meet the B.C. Lions — try to contain Cameron Wake, the most dominant defensive lineman in the CFL today.
The six-foot-three, 257-pound Wake has 19 quarterback sacks in 14 games and was a thorn in the side of the Edmonton offence in their last meeting, a 40-34 Lions win at home.
“The teams that struggle against him are teams that aren’t consistent,” the six-foot-seven, 320-pound Armstrong said Thursday. “Hopefully, I can be as consistent as possible, work my butt off and (quarterback) Ricky (Ray) will throw the ball on time and it will work out for us.”
It certainly didn’t work out for the Eskimos during their last visit to Vancouver, when they were 4-2 en route to a 6-3 record before slipping to their current 8-6 mark. A parade of turnovers and...

When Lions vice chairman Bill Ford, Jr. criticized Matt Millen last week, his popularity in Michigan skyrocketed.
But the Fords, father and son, had quite the week dealing with the former Lions president and CEO, Millen.
At nearly the same time that Ford Jr. stated that Millen should be fired, William Clay Ford, Sr. called Millen to inform him that he was ruminating about whether to keep his president and CEO.
And when Ford Sr. saw the groundswell of support for Millen’s departure... more
The Lions Report From: sports-boards.net Post Date: 2008-09-28 09:02:59
I watched this show for the first time all season, last night.
Lewand was on there, and he *REALLY* believes that Him and Mayhew can turn this season around. He even went into detail about how he thinks they can do it. Things like raiding other teams practice squads was mentioned.
Anyways, I didn’t get the impression that he was just spewing shit for the sake of spewing. I think he really believes the Lions are going to the playoffs this year.

Quarterback Jon Kitna might have a back injury that is more serious than expected, and if he isn’t traded by Tuesday’s 4 p.m. deadline, the Detroit Lions plan to put him on injured reserve, according to The Oakland (Mich.) Press.

Because of his back problems, Kitna did not travel to Minnesota for Sunday’s 12-10 loss to the Vikings, the first game he had not started since joining the Lions before the 2006 season.

It must be football season. The grass is green, the ladies are starting to show a little ankle, every city street is blocked off for construction and, oh, Doug Berry isn’t exactly raving about Troy Westwood.
“Right now, he’s really struggling,” the Bombers head coach said Monday of his veteran placekicker/pincushion, noting that Westwood’s leg strength is “not there where it was last year.”
So it’s official: Th... more

Andre Durie could scarcely believe his ears when he was told he could play football again without a knee brace.
“When they first gave me the news, I was kind of shocked,” the 26-year-old York University product said yesterday at the Toronto Argonauts training camp in Mississauga. “I was expecting them to say I should keep it on.
“But I’m grateful that the strength in the muscle is enough to convince the doctors who once told me I’... more

A military base in a town he has never heard of in a foreign country probably is the last place Peter Warrick thought he would be, attempting to salvage what once seemed to be a promising football career.
But at least the former National Football League receiver has come north with the right attitude.
“A lot of (U.S.) players think (the Canadian Football League) is a lower level. But football’s all the same,” said Warrick, who... more

Prospective Tiger-Cat cornerback Dennis Mitchell ripped Kelvin Kight’s helmet off during a receiver blocking drill.
Then Mitchell got into the receiver’s grill when the latter objected to the rough treatment.
“I’ll be here all day long,” Mitchell barked at his teammate before the two were separated.
A few minutes later prospective Tiger-Cat defensive back Chris Thompson picked off one of Richie Williams’s throws, much to ... more
