I just returned from taking my oldest son to the church. He was headed out with a group of thirteen fourth through sixth graders to church camp. Before he left the house we talked to him about listening to adults, doing what he was told, showing gratitude, and about forty other things. Before the group left they gathered together to discuss the trip, establish ground rules and pray. "Okay, everyone right here. Sit here in this square on the gym floor and let’s talk," called the youth leader. My son came running, quickly took his place, but then rather than sitting down as he was told to he stated, "I’d rather stand, thanks." Argh! At least he said thanks. When they wrapped up their mini-meeting and headed off to the transportation I pulled my son aside and reminded him about the importance of doing EXACTLY what he was told, and doing it the FIRST TIME he was told. I have been watching as one of my colleagues has been organizing his books in his new office. First he put them in stacks by topic, then he made category tags which he put on the shelves, then after putting the books on to the shelves by category he has been rearranging them.
