You all are gonna flip, or rather, explode, when you see this. I’ve been looking for 3D CAD news out of Siggraph08 that happened last week, but have not found much beyond some announcements about rendering models.
Fortunately, Mark Treadwell from Premier Rides came across some info and filled me in. A team from Berkeley has developed an automated system for viewing interactive 3D exploded views of models . Check out the video after the break.
Not only does it automate the production of exploded views from a systematic algorithm, it also creates diagrams of the parts in a way that you can interact with them to visualize assemblies and sub-assemblies as they are naturally assembled and dis-assembled. It’s the way this 3D jazz should have always worked. The video shows it all.

The Australian have some crazy idea that you can get 3D data from drawing lines on top of video. They’re actually doing it too.
The Australian Centre for Visual Technologies is gettin’ all fancy with innovative technology and have creatively named it VideoTrace.
VideoTrace is a system for interactively generating realistic 3D models of objects from video—models that might be inserted into a video game, a simulation environment, or another video sequence.

more Best CES Coverage? Not SolidSmackFrom: feeds.feedburner.com

Yep, SolidSmack is not “live at CES” like all these other blogs. I’m just sitting back and letting all those guys do the legwork, shoving each other to get to the laser pointers and paying $5 for an ounce of water. I’ll have my chance at SolidWorks World.
The 2008 International CES features all the latest consumer electronics a future technology.
For the best coverage of CES without the crowds here’s the Top 3 sites I recommend to get the latest scoop.

more Surprise Guest At SolidWorks World Leaked? From: feeds.feedburner.com
Post Date: 2008-01-07 12:01:26
3DCadNews just broke that they are in the know on the Special Guest at SolidWorks World.
If you guess correctly, you’ll win a cheap dinner and be part of causing pandemonium at SolidWorks HQ. Here’s the clues so far…
Clue 1:
Clark Kent thinks he has eyeglasses to die for
Clue 2:
He’s a Man
Clue 3:
He is afraid of heights
I’ve got it narrowed down to P. Diddy or Elton John, but number two kinda eliminates the later. hmmm.

Last week we talked about naming features to improve your design . Sometimes, on very rare occasions, when your feeling especially detail oriented, you may want to add a special character to a name or note.
Fortunately, Windows has a bunch of obscure numbers you can use to add some symbols to you descriptions and it all starts with the magic Alt button. The button next to the spacebar you may be most familiar with when SolidWorks locks up and you resort to pressing Ctrl-Alt-Delete.
