Jim Webb is the most interesting politician to arrive since John and Bobby Kennedy lit up the 1960’s political scene. He’s now the junior senator from Virginia, and most pundits are largely ignoring him to date, but the political landscape is about to see some seismic changes thanks to the soon-to-be-Honorable James Webb. We’d all be well-served to fasten our seat belts now, because it’s going to be a wild (and most enjoyable) ride. The latest Webb presence was reported in the Washington Post, involving a story of Webb snubbing Bush at a recent get-together. It appears that the Bush camp didn’t appreciate Webb’s candor, and so the GOP smear machine fired off a shot at Webb via its resident GOP apologist George Will. Will’s subsequent column in the Post took Webb to task for being rude to King-Georgie-the-Incompetent, but omitted the crucial context for Webb’s snub, and thus Will is now being rightly taken to task for journ...

Fred Thompson is clearly the natural candidate to succeed George W Bush within the GOP firmament. It would seem that the task of finding someone as oblivious to reality as George Dumbya would be a difficult one, as it really did take a whole squad of Mayberry Machiavellis to add up to that much stoopid, but Fred seems to be up to the job, and all by himself to boot. Consider his message to Iowa voters today regarding the missing-Iraqi-WMD problem:We can’t forget the fact that although a... more

Now that the week of Petraeus is finally finished, we can get serious about the mess we are making in Iraq. We’ve seen the meaningless DoD charts and graphs showing nothing in the way of progress, we’ve wondered how on earth the White House ever managed to talk a bright guy like David Petraeus into shilling for a pointless strategy in Mesopotamia ("the surge" even contradicts Petraeus’ own work in the new DoD Counterinsurgency manual), and we’ve celebrated the si... more

So Tony Snow is leaving his position as White House press secretary to go make some real money in the private sector. It turns out that the $168,000 per year he makes as the spinner-in-chief is too paltry a sum for him, so it’s back to the likes of Fox News or somesuch lowbrow entertainment circuit. And President Bush’s review of Snow’s performance is concise as can be, namely "it’s been a joy to watch him spar with you", as the prez said to the assembled members of the p... more

President Bush visited New Orleans today, on the second anniversary of the landfall of Hurricane Katrina. He has caught a lot of criticism for this assertion, made in his speech today:It’s one thing to come and give a speech in Jackson Square; it’s another thing to keep paying attention to whether or not progress is being made. And I hope people understand we do, we’re still paying attention. While it would be easy to call the president a hypocrite or a liar (or worse),... more
