Fighting in Shiite district, violence flares in north Iraq (Roundup)

Baghdad - Explosions were heard Wednesday in a Shiite area
in eastern Baghdad where the US military said it killed 15 gunmen
overnight, while four bombings in northern Iraq caused casualties
among civilians and police, military and security sources said.

In Sadr City, US and Iraqi troops launched more security sweeps in
the slum area where they have been involved in an offensive against
the Mahdi Army militia loyal to cleric Moqtada al-Sadr since the end
of March.

Several operations and attacks Tuesday evening and night involving
US ground forces and warplanes left 15 ‘criminals’ dead in north-
eastern and eastern Baghdad, a US military statement said.

In one of two incidents specified in the US statement, US soldiers
were attacked Tuesday with rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) in
eastern Baghdad, returned fire and killed five gunmen.

In another Baghdad attack, a US patrol was again attacked by RPGs.
Soldiers then engaged with the gunmen with small arms fire, killing
six of them.

At least 400 civilians were killed and 1,720 injured in Sadr City
since the outbreak of fighting, according to estimates of Sadrist
politicians.

In the northern city of Mosul, nine people were injured in a car
bomb attack on a police patrol, police told the Voices of Iraq news
agency.

Four policemen were among the wounded in the attack by the car
bomb that was detonated by remote control in the western Tamuz
district.

Earlier, triple bombings in the restive city left three people
dead and 13 injured, according to police.

Earlier, the US military said a woman suicide bomber killed 18
people and wounded two in an attack on a police station in Diyala
province.
