I flew into Houston the evening of Wednesday the 10th to attend OCA Greater Houston ’s gala. I knew Ike would strike the Texas coast, but it appeared headed for Matagorda Bay, not Galveston Bay; Houston would be rainy, not ruined. By Thursday morning I was headed to Austin . On the way there, I passed 29 ambulances headed the other direction. As I came into greater Austin, I listened to the governor’s press conference in which he explained over 100 ambulances were headed to greater Houston to evacuate those needing mobile life support. It looked bad - as bad as Rita looked when I evacuated to Austin then. I hoped Ike, like Rita, would veer off to the east and damage less populated areas. I reached Austin much faster than expected as mandatory evacuations began for some areas near the coast. Because (hat tip Kuff ) of this warning from the National Hurricane Center :

The turnout in Texas was absolutely stunning. Votes in the Democratic primary more or less match the number of votes Kerry received in the general in 2004. More people participated in the Democratic precinct conventions in Texas than voted in the Republican primary. Texas is in play in November and John Cornyn better start boxing up his place in the Beltway.
