Big money is backing wind power, and the number of investors ready to step up to the plate continues to grow. But according to an article in Renewable Energy World, that growth is hampered by a lack of a nationwide “electronic transmission superhighway”.
In the sixties America created the interstate superhighways that now crisscross our nation. Now, our country’s energy security depends on a new interstate initiative. Will the U.S. government step up to the plate?
“Across the country, hundreds of wind projects comprising tens of thousands of wind turbines are on hold because no one wants to step forward and pay for upgrades that will primarily benefit others. The obvious solution to this problem is a policy framework that will allow firms interested in building new transmission to collect the costs of the infrastructure investment from those who will benefit from it.”

Otter Tail Power Co. wants to increase a special charge to electric customers that helps pay for its wind energy projects.
The charge now adds $1.45 to the electric bill of an Otter Tail residential customer who uses 750 kilowatt-hours of power each month.
Otter Tail is asking North Dakota’s Public Service Commission to increase the charge, starting Jan. 1. It would raise the payment from $1.45 to $3.83 monthly.

2008 a Record Year for the Wind Power Industry
Wind power is on a roll: the American Wind Energy Association released its 3rd Quarter Market Report earlier this week, and it showed that the US wind energy industry has installed 4,204 megawatts in 2008 so far. That figure puts the nationwide wind industry on track to surpass the record expansion of last year, in which the installation of wind turbines and farms reached a total 5,249 MW. The report spells out some go...... more

While few people would doubt that wind power shows great promise, where new wind farms get built is often a contentious issue, with one of the issues being (of course) impact on wildlife and the environment. That’s where the newly formed American Wind Wildlife Institute comes in. The group of 20 wind power and environmental organizations will collaborate on research, mapping, mitigation and public education on best practices in balancing habitat protection and w... more

Nevada currently gets about 90% of its electricity from fossil fuels, and the majority source fuel is natural gas. As natural gas prices are predicted to rise, a debate is stirring about wheth... more
What lessons can be learned from this tiny car, that Europeans are calling Un-American?
When my husband and I look for a parking spot on the crowded Chicago streets, we often joke that our tiny Smart car would have many potential parking spots. Our joke can now become a reality as the Daimler Mercedes-Benz Smart car hits the American market. This car might help show Americans that bigger is not always better.
With nearly 1 million car sales in 36 countries, this car has made quit... more
Dr. Jeffrey Martin and William L. Kubic, Jr. have proposed a concept to synthesize gasoline from carbon dioxide emissions, and have dubbed their idea “Green Freedom.” “The idea is simple,” (a sure bet that it’s anything but) says Kenneth Chang in the New York Times :
Air would be blown over a liquid solution of potassium carbonate, which would absorb the carbon dioxide [which] would then be extracted and subjected to chemical reactions that... more
I just had two super-efficient compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs) burn out on me, which surprised me since they’re only about a year old. Then again, my husband does leave the bathroom light on a lot…. At any rate, the rest of my bulbs are still going strong, even after several years for most of them. Here’s a great video on CFL 101.
