jpl_news_printJon Peter Lewis was one of the favorites on American Idol, though during a season I did not watch. He released his debut album in 2006 and just put out his second album, Break the Silence (). This is pretty much the type of album you would expect to get from a former American Idol contestant. It’s pretty mainstream; it’s not going to be rocking the boat. If a comparison is needed, the album is a slightly unbalanced mix of Daughtry’s self-titled debut and Clay Aiken’s Measure of a Man - closer to a softer Daughtry though than an edgier Aiken (in fact, the chord progressions of the chorus sections of Lewis’ ‘Now that I’m Kneeling’ and Daughtry’s ‘Feels Like Tonight’ are strikingly similar), with some Kristian Leontiou and Coldplay thrown in for good measure. Not having listened to him on Idol or to his first album, I don’t know how this outing compares. However, considering I was willing to drop roughly three and one-half dollars on the album at Amie St after listening to the preview of a couple tracks, and not knowing his Idol connections, I am quite satisfied with the purchase. While it’s pretty easy for artists to rely on Idol connections, I might venture a guess that they probably don’t want to do that much more. Idol has produced very few artists that come into their own and whenever I see that Idol runner-ups have a new album, I tend to ignore them completely. I guess it’s a good thing that I didn’t know that Jon Peter Lewis was among that group - I wouldn’t want to have missed the opportunity to add this to my collection. This album may be not drawing much attention in a few years, but he is clearly a talented person, both in terms of singing and song-writing and should do well in the long run.

I’ve been listening to this album quite a bit since I got it yesterday, in part because I want to make sure what I write is really how I feel about it, but also because I’ve just really been enjoying it. There are a few tracks that are clear favorites, such as the title track (the video of which can be seen on YouTube), but they are all worth multiple listens. You can listen to ‘Now That I’m Kneeling’ below. I chose this one to feature because it’s one of the most radio-friendly songs, complete with catchy chorus and memorable melody. Although I liked the title track ‘Break the Silence’, it was this one that really convinced me to buy the album, which is probably why these songs are tracks one and two, respectively, on the album. Hit ‘em fast and early. Again, hopefully not belaboring the point, the tracks later on the album are just as worthy of your attention as this one is. In fact, I had a rather hard time of whittling down the options to just one for embedding here. Hopefully I chose wisely.
