Try to imagine this: The President uses hysteria and the fear of terrorism as an excuse to suspend the constitution and cripple the legal system, creating an atmosphere in which he can operate with impunity, spying and wiretapping not only without a warrant* but without any documentation, and arresting and imprisoning anyone he wants without the interference of lawyers and judges. I know, I’m not stretching your imagination much. Between the PATRIOT Act and the Military Commissions Act, Bush has managed a lot of that. Under the current state of affairs, even America citizens can be arrested and detained without charge and without access to a lawyer for an indefinite period of time. Other parts of the US Constitution have simply been rendered moot by the laziness and/or cowardice of the press.
