I have always been interested with street photography and street portraiture but never really became very good at it because I’m painfully shy. Participating in the 100 Strangers Project really changed that. The thought of taking photos of strangers stealthily is enough to give me indigestion. That’s how bad it was. So when I decided to join the project, it was really a big leap for me. The first stranger I approached was, luckily, a very easy shot. He was nice and accomodating, even if a little shy. I was rejected once, but not rudely so. I have yet to meet someone who would be rude to me when saying “no”. Of all the photographic memes that I’ve done, this is, by far, the most significant to me because it’s helping me overcome one of my biggest handicaps.
I found that the way you feel about approaching people will somehow determine their reaction to you. I also found that if you are honest with people, they will most likely sense it a...

Robinsons Place Ermita mall guard’s harassmentFrom: blog.pao-alfonso.info

Some guards seem to have a superiority complex over people, especially fellow-Filipinos. I recently had a run-in with one of the guards at the Padre Faura entrance of Robinsons Place, Ermita because I brought my DSLR (a Nikon D40) with me to the mall. It is not uncommon for us to see foreigners with cameras slung around their neck, it’s even a common thing to see families taking photographs together while eating in restaurants. I don’t know what inspired that guard to deny m...
more Is post-processing cheating?From: blog.pao-alfonso.info

There are a lot of people who seem to think that it is. Personally, I do edit a lot of my photos in Photoshop, although I do sometimes use some SOOC (Straight Out Of the Camera) images. Does post-processing your photos imply that you lack the technical skills needed to make the photo come out the way you want them too straight from the camera?
The way I see it, processing photos in a darkroom is also a form of post-processing, except that it’s more basic, less technologically ad...
more First street portraitFrom: blog.pao-alfonso.info
Post Date: 2008-09-22 22:57:38
This is my first street portrait, something I took for the 100 strangers project. I was a little tense because it was my first time to approach a stranger for a photograph, and it was along EDSA. Even if it we were in front of our building, I just couldn’t help but feel edgy because the area is notorious for snatchers. I wanted to step back and really get a picture of him in action, but I couldn’t move too freely. I settled for this angle, even if it looks like just a normal...

The UP Oblation statue is probably one of the most photographed statues in the Philippines. It’s a challenge to take a shot of this statue that is different from the conventional angles that everyone takes. Above is the photo I took of the oblation statue at UP Diliman today. The point of view is a little restricted because there’s no other place where you can take a good shot except at the base of the statue. When you stand at the base, the two flagpo...
