Filed under: Bengals , Lions , NFL Fans The Detroit Lions have already traded away the league’s best defender , but that doesn’t mean team president Matt Millen doesn’t know what he’s doing. Actually, that’s exactly what it means, and it’s the latest example of the poor decision-making skillz that have plagued him and haunted Lions fans during his nine-year career. But all is not lost; head coach Rod Marinelli is committed to winning, and he’s willing to do whatever it takes to make that happen. He fired pass-happy offensive coordinator Mike Martz after the ’07 season and brought in Jim Colletto , an avowed fan of the running game. Being a proponent of the run and being successful at it are two different things, however, which is why Millen worked his personnel magic this afternoon and upgraded the position with two deft moves : The Lions have confirmed that free agent running back Rudi Johnson has agreed to terms on ...

It’s the most reliable indicator that a professional football team has developed a reputation for ineptitude: Oddsmakers start posting betting lines on whether it will stumble to the finish line of the season without a victory.
With six games remaining in the regular season, that’s where the Detroit Lions find themselves.

When Lions vice chairman Bill Ford, Jr. criticized Matt Millen last week, his popularity in Michigan skyrocketed.
But the Fords, father and son, had quite the week dealing with the former Lions president and CEO, Millen.
At nearly the same time that Ford Jr. stated that Millen should be fired, William Clay Ford, Sr. called Millen to inform him that he was ruminating about whether to keep his president and CEO.
And when Ford Sr. saw the groundswell of support for Millen’s departure... more
The Lions Report From: sports-boards.net Post Date: 2008-09-28 09:02:59
I watched this show for the first time all season, last night.
Lewand was on there, and he *REALLY* believes that Him and Mayhew can turn this season around. He even went into detail about how he thinks they can do it. Things like raiding other teams practice squads was mentioned.
Anyways, I didn’t get the impression that he was just spewing shit for the sake of spewing. I think he really believes the Lions are going to the playoffs this year.

Quarterback Jon Kitna might have a back injury that is more serious than expected, and if he isn’t traded by Tuesday’s 4 p.m. deadline, the Detroit Lions plan to put him on injured reserve, according to The Oakland (Mich.) Press.

Because of his back problems, Kitna did not travel to Minnesota for Sunday’s 12-10 loss to the Vikings, the first game he had not started since joining the Lions before the 2006 season.

No starts for Drew From: sports-boards.net Post Date: 2008-10-27 11:02:22
Coach Rod Marinelli stated that Drew Stanton will not start at quarterback for the purpose of evaluating him for the future, according to the Detroit Free Press. Marinelli said Stanton will play only if there is an injury to Dan Orlovsky or if coaches think Stanton is better than Orlovsky, based on games and practice. The Lions are not winning games, but Orlovsky has not turned the ball over in three starts, and Marinelli does not want to go with Stanton, who missed all of last season with a kn... more

Marinelli on Lions rookie Cliff Avril: ’We’ve got a special player’
BY CARLOS MONARREZ • FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER • October 29, 2008
Cliff Avril thought he was going to be a linebacker at Purdue , until he was switched to defensive end during his junior season. Then he thought he would be drafted by a team that plays the same 3-4 defensive scheme as the Boilermakers, until the Lions,... more
--The Broncos needed help at tailback, and decided to give Tatum Bell another chance. Bell, a 2004 second-round pick of the Broncos, was out of football since being cut by the Lions and being accused of taking running back Rudi Johnson#39;s bags. Bell said he worried that accusation -- which he claims was a misunderstanding -- might have kept him out of the NFL. I wasn#39;t getting any interest, any calls -- I think it was because of that, Bell said.Read More... ( http://msn.foxsports.co... more

Here we go again. It’s the Lions’ self-fulfilling prophecy, if you will.
“If Bears coach Lovie Smith is right and you establish your existence in the first quarter of the season, then the Detroit Lions may need psychological counseling,” Fox analyst Brian Billick said before Sunday’s game against Chicago.
