DJ Shadow’s official site has always been ahead of the internet’s learning curve. So it’s nice to see that the legendary Bay Area turntablist’s Q&A feature is back up and running, and divulging some insider information. He still can’t name samples, for fear of lawsuits, but there’s still lots to reveal, including his love of James Brown marginalia and the MPC line. In July 2008, Shadow attended a Christie’s auction looking for some of the Godfather of Funk’s more esoteric memorabilia while on the Hard Sell Tour with Cut Chemist and Kid Koala. But he didn’t want to buy just anything, but rather a treasured item from Brown’s classic 1966-1977 years. And he found what he was looking for. "There was a plaque dedicated to Brown from then-governor Jimmy Carter," Shadow answered in response to a reader’s query on the auction," that says, ’Thanks for your help with heroin addiction -- 1972.’ Brown recorded ...

Shadow Boxing: Underground music and mainstream clubs battle for supremacy :: City Weekend Beijing BlogFrom: feedproxy.google.com

Date: Nov 6th 2008 10:51a.m. Contributed by: stonebanks As the traditional music industry faces an uncertain future, DJs, producers and bands unable to rely on music sales royalties look increasingly to touring to generate income. Often, ill-informed booking agents outside of China, eager for their pound of flesh from an artist’s performance fee make venue-booking decisions which appear incongruous. The booking of instrumental hip-hop innovator DJ Shadow at Angel Club on Nov. 7 has raised eyeb...

What does it all mean? From: metafilter.com

What does it all mean? In many ways, today’s remix culture kicked off in earnest one weekend in 1983 when two ad men (one a recording engineer ) spent a weekend in a studio crafting the first pop record made up entirely of samples in the hopes of winning a $100 remix contest. Although the record became a club hit, there was no way for it to be released commercially as there was no way to clear the 60+ samples within. Nonetheless, two followup records, Lesson 2 (James Brown...

So one of the world’s best DJ’s came to China this weekend and where did he choose to play... Richy, one of the worst places on earth unless you happen to be a gangster, a 15 year old Shanghainese girl, a strange man that likes rubbing peoples legs while they dance (this happened to us the last time we went there) or an Edison Chen wannabe. As for the show Shadow played an amazing set (the best we’ve ever heard him...

Major ChangeFrom: thepartisanpatriot.com

So after some thought and discussion with people beyond my years, I decided to change my major from finance to accounting. It’s not really a huge deal, since everything I’ve taken so far also counts towards my accounting degree, but it needed to happen.
I realized that accounting is one of (if not the most) recession-proof job in the financial world. Auditors are always needed, no matter the economic conditions.
It’s much more feasible for getting a job right out of...

[Mark Mulligan] Let’s Rock, Just Not Quite YetFrom: weblogs.jupiterresearch.com

So Apple’s ‘LetÂ’s RockÂ’ event proved to be one of iPod evolution rather than iTunes revolution. The iPod Touch certainly looks a richer proposition for a relative minor set of changes (though the new games on demo looked cool). There were some typically impressive numbers (100 million app downloads, 160+ million cumulative iPod sales) but no mention if iTunes download sales. Has the momentum slowed after some impressively strong recent growth? The Genius feature is the m...

[Mark Mulligan] A Cross Roads for AppleFrom: weblogs.jupiterresearch.com

ThereÂ’s perhaps a little more anticipation than usual of AppleÂ’s forthcoming announcement (and I’m beinging to fear there won’t be anything groundbreaking from a music perspective, but I can still hope). In some ways Apple are at a cross roads. As a maker of high end portable media devices they have built something of ceiling of growth with the iPhone. If you have an iPhone you have most of what you need from a portable media player. The meat of AppleÂ’s iPod target custome...

[Mark Mulligan] Twitter Steals AppleÂ’s ThunderFrom: weblogs.jupiterresearch.com
Post Date: 2008-09-10 02:25:24
Even though there wasn’t any ‘killer’ announcement yesterday at Apple’s ‘Let’s Rock’ event it was very notable for an unexpected reason: the role Twitter played. I was posting sporadically throughout the event and thus saw the flurry of Tweeting activity that was going on around me. With no exaggeration, close to 90% of the posts were all related to the event and a large share of them were actually in San Francisco or London (which in itself is indicative of the tech professional ...
