I have an upcoming gig at the Corner Bar in Saugatuck. I would dearly love to have a CD to sell at this gig, but my personal life is sort of out of control right now. My friend, Jonathon Fegel, will also perform with me. But he is extremely busy with his full time job. We are having difficulty finding a time he can come over and rehearse. This comes from “Extraordinary Relationships: A New Way of Thinking About Human Interactions” by Roberta M. Gilbert. She’s a family systems person who also seems to have studied with Murray Bowen (the found of family systems thinking). I was introduced this “way of thinking” by Ed Friedman. The basic insight is that the smallest unit of analysis and understanding of human behavior is not the individual personality but groups like family of origin or emo... more

In addition to the two books mentioned in my previous post, I am also reading Schoenberg’s “Structural Functions of Harmony.” My copy looks like this but the title is white on a red background. I have gone back to Schoenberg after getting a renewed appreciation for him and his music from Ross’s “The Rest is Noise.” When I was in undergrad school, my theory teacher looked askance at this book (Schoenberg not Ross) and told me that if I coul... more

Eileen and I skipped the Hatch’s easter egg hunt. I was too ill after church and she decided to stay home and keep me company which was nice. While I was at musical performances on Saturday, Eileen made these with the new wacom and handy dandy software that Mike D. has recommended to us: EILEEN PICTURES: After church yesterday, I read the NYT. Then put on a DVD of Rocky and Bullwinkle and proceeded to fall asleep on the couch. Later we watched the DVD, “... more

Today is the Hatch Family Easter Egg Hunt. The Hatches are my wife’s family. The high point for me is watching my brother-in-law (whom I think resembles Ross Perot) dress up as a huge bunny and scare the fuck out of the kids. He refuses to speak once he is dressed and made up. This unintentionally adds to his grimness and forbidding surreal appearance. Usually at least one or two of the grandkids absolutely refuses to go out in the yard while “Ross” is out there... more
