Hi everybody, I’ll be helping to fill in for Deborah Siegel over at Girl with Pen a bit over the next two weeks with some cross-posts, so you can take a look here and there. It’s always best to start your week off with a little contemplation about how much those pesky, pervasive, much-(statistically)-vaunted “sex differences” between men and women hold water beyond the oversimplified pop study and advertising board room (let’s all take a minute to painfully remember Mel Gibson’s What Women Want movie). In a brilliant move over at Slate, Amanda Schaffer and Emily Bazelon take on the latest literature by the “sex difference evangelists” in a six-part series (click through to read them all and thanks to Daphne Uviller for sending this over!) Looking at everything from language to empathy to hormones to Larry Summers, they ask why there is so much focus on the Mars/Venus dichotomy, and so little on the many var...

The Hookup Generation: You Talkin’ About Me?From: moddparker.wordpress.com

I have a new post over at Girl with Pen where I finally address something that has infuriated me over the years: the obtuse criticism by members of the armchair journalism corps and the religious right of the so-called “hookup generation.” But what most concerns me is the over-protective “concern” they show for the “fragile” psyches of the women of this generation, ostensibly permanently bruised by being loved (even if well-loved) and left. ...

Well, more like personalized redesign. This summer, I finally realized that this internet (or as some prefer, intertron) thing wasn’t going away any time soon, so I figured I’d better learn how to work it to my advantage. Thus I took on the job of putting together a new website for Deborah Siegel. Basically, using a WordPress theme as my platform, I redesigned the template (css and php) to customize it for Deborah’s needs. After a few flubs, I don’t th...
more Blogging at Girl with PenFrom: moddparker.wordpress.com

A quick note that I will now be blogging at least once a week at Girl with Pen . While I don’t plan to cross-post here necessarily, I will alert you all to when new posts of mine go up. Today I blogged about that crazy lawyer who is suing Columbia for offering women’s studies courses, and then pondered if we shouldn’t just get rid of Women’s Studies in favor of Gender Studies anyway. I also went on a probably too long riff about why Gender Studies is incredibly impor...
more Double, no Triple, Standards in the MediaFrom: moddparker.wordpress.com
Post Date: 2008-07-29 09:06:05
Slate writer, Jack Shafer, wrote a provocative article last week on a “double standard” at play in the media’s treatment of scandalous love affairs. Now, I think it is easy to pinpoint that double standard at work for women versus men: just look at the flack over CBS chief foreign affairs correspondent, Lara Logan’s relationships in Iraq, which spread to the front page of the New York Post. And she’s not even a nationally-recognized figure.
But Shafer cl...
