Since I started writing this blog I’ve received a bunch of new phones, services, and various gizmos to test out and review. Well last month I got a very exciting new service to try. It’s called MagicJack. MagicJack is a VoIP telephone service. It’s different from other VoIP providers, like Vonage or your cable company, in that the VoIP adapter plugs into a USB port on your computer, rather then directly into your router. Another major difference is the price. MagicJack only costs $20 a year. Not $20 a month, but $20 for the entire year and that includes all your domestic calling, caller id, voice mail, call waiting, and even voice mail to email.

The only caveat to selecting a phone number relates to enhanced 911 emergency services. During the registration process, you have to select a physical address that will be transmitted to 911 operators if you call 911 from your MagicJack. The physical address you use and the area code you choose don’t have to be in the same area, but if you move your take your MagicJack to another location and call 911, the operators will only see the address you entered during registration, not ...

The first time you plug in the adapter you have to register with MagicJack . During the registration process you select a phone number, or at least you select the area code and exchange you want to you. You have your choice of hundreds of area codes from around the country. The exchange list isn’t as robust, but you can get an exchange that’s reasonable close to where you live. You can also select a phone number in some other part of the county. You can select an area...

The MagicJack adapter also comes with a handy 4 inch USB extension cord in case you don’t have room to plug the adapter right into your PC. The adapter is also a USB flash drive . MagicJack has cleverly put all the software right onto the adapter, so there is nothing to download and no installation CD is needed. When you plug in the adapter is self installs everything it needs. This fact, combined with its tiny size and weight, makes the adapter exceptionally portable. You ca...

You do have to buy the MagicJack adapter, which is $20. So that makes your 1st year of service $40, but only $20 per year afterwards. Again, that’s $20 per year, not per month. When I first read that I thought it must be a mistake, but it’s not. Now the MagicJack adapter is a unique piece of technology. Instead of using a traditional VoIP adapter that plugs into your router or is built into your router the way the cable company works, the MagicJack adapter is tiny. It&rsqu...
