This weblog has been upgraded to the latest WordPress 2.6.2. To you, the reader, it should mean no difference at all. To me, it means I get to use the fabulous Windows Live Writer to publish my posts, even if I need to run it in a virtual machine (I use a Mac and yeah, Live Writer is that good).

Windows Live Writer is an excellent blogging tool with a lot of possible choices of extensions to enhance your blogs. With a plug-in to enhance your ordinary pictures, you can achieve Polaroid-style pictures with tilts and captions. This plugin gives pictures a more dramatic or nostalgic effect. See some of the examples I got using this plugin: If you don’t have Windows Live Writer yet you will need to get it from Windows Live website. After installing Windows Live Writer, you can add p... more
The Benefits of Offline Blog Editors

This is a cross-post from the Wardman Wire, singing the praises of editing your blog offline, rather than using the Back Office of whatever blog application you use. Offline blog editors are PC-based editors that allow blog posts to be written on a local PC and then uploaded as a separate operation. I was asked about the benefits I’ve been using an offline Blog Editor called Blogdesk by Johannes Oppermann. I am very pleased with the software. This is only suitable for a PC, but there ... more

I need a private, personal FriendFeed
From: weblog.smirnov.ca
Post Date: 2008-04-15 08:40:50

FriendFeed is an online service that aggregates publicly available information created by you and your friends on the web. I’ve signed up for it this morning. FriendFeed learned who my contacts are by pulling my Facebook contacts. I’ve also told it I’m using del.icio.us to publish bookmarks. After 20 second setup, I have this: I like the clean and simple way the aggregate information is presented. And I hope Ben feels better soon. Anyone with a Facebook account wil... more
What I learned about Facebook platform

Few months ago I’ve started looking at integrating www.piworx.com service with facebook. The result was pishare app and a bunch of learnings. It is easy to get started. Then, YMMV . Facebook team did a great job providing documentation about how to start. It didn’t take long at all to get things going. But whenever one steps off the beaten path, the quality and reliability of the documentation drops dramatically. Because the platform evolves quickly, a lot of what’s be... more
Facebook ACLs are here

Facebook finally released an extension of profile access controls that let you select which friends see what. As expected , the UI for these privacy controls is based on friends lists, but is somewhat clunky. Nevertheless it is an important step forward. It’ll be interesting to see how many people will end up sing it. ... more

Huge thanks to sponsors and organisors of Montreal’s blitzweekend . The event that had a goal of creating a viable product in one weekend and then presenting it before the audience to a panel of Judges. It was a blast! Going from zero lines of code on Saturday morning to a working system on Sunday 4PM is a great fun made even better by the fantastic team I got to work with. The Web Research service I imagined just a few weeks ago is now live and it is called Noogl... more
