Now this is quite the shock! Bill Kristol offers McCain some advice for his campaign: It’s time for John McCain to fire his campaign. He has nothing to lose. His campaign is totally overmatched by Obama’s. The Obama team is well organized, flush with resources, and the candidate and the campaign are in sync. The McCain campaign, once merely problematic, is now close to being out-and-out dysfunctional. Its combination of strategic incoherence and operational incompetence has become toxic. If the race continues over the next three weeks to be a conventional one, McCain is doomed. He may be anyway. Bush is unpopular. The media is hostile. The financial meltdown has made things tougher. Maybe the situation is hopeless — and if it is, then nothing McCain or his campaign does matters. But I’m not convinced by such claims of inevitability. McCain isn’t Bush. The media isn’t all-powerful. And the economic crisis still presents an opportunity to show leadership. Th...

Democrats may tax health benefits - The Boston Globe WASHINGTON - In the last month of the presidential campaign, it was one of Barack Obama and Joe Biden’s strongest attack lines: John McCain, they warned, would “tax your healthcare benefits for the first time ever.”But now, some Congressional Democrats in charge of health reform are talking about doing just that. ... more

http://dagnyd.net/vichy.htm Welcome to Vichy America This was not just another election. The last time we had a presidential election, the Left tried to get a brazen traitor elected - namely John Kerry. This new President from the Left is even more than that. Obama was no traitor, because he never was really on our side in the first place. Obama was really a foreign candidate - in spirit, funding, and citizenship. Yes, Rick Davis was still affiliated with Davis, Manafort

... and the campaign knew it, since Davis’s salary was paid directly to the firm, which was also collecting $15,000 a month from Freddie Mac for providing, as far as the record shows, no services whatever, in a deal (shakedown) arranged by Davis personally. Two lessons here: 1. The McCain campaign is a collection of crooks and liars. But that’s sort of dog-bites-man news by now. 2. The wheels are starting to come off; different factions in the campaign are now using the... more

You’ve seen the news:Capitol Hill sources are telling me that senior McCain people are more than concerned about Palin. The campaign has held a mock debate and a mock press conference; both are being described as "disastrous." One senior McCain aide was quoted as saying, "What are we going to do?" The McCain people want to move this first debate to some later, undetermined date, possibly never. People on the inside are saying the Alaska Governor is "clueless." FiveThirtyEight visits Illinois: What McCain has going for him here : Very, very little. [h]e’ll probably carry a dozen or perhaps a couple dozen downstate counties. When we ran Illinois through our similarity score matrix, one of the first states that came up was California. The comparison seems counterintuitive at first, but each state contains a similar mash-up of demographics, of city, suburb, sprawl, and farmlands, and the two states have voted with one another every year since 1... more
