Must-reads: John Robson on our “disgusting” politics; Don Martin on the Dion interview; Chantal Hébert on Harper’s Quebec debacle; Lorne Gunter on the Canadian economy; Rosie DiManno on negotiating with the Taliban; Jeffrey Simpson on Dion-mania.
“We got nothing”
In which Canadian politics touches bottom in the cesspool, and starts digging.
John Robson ’s column in the Ottawa Citizen isn’t about what you might think it’s about , but his lede is entirely apropos today: “With the election just days away, it’s not enough to declare that contemporary Canadian politics is disgusting. You need to show it.” His evidence, as usual, involves the dozens of asinine, self-congratulatory, “redolent of the frat house” press releases that arrive in his inbox every day during the campaign, and the unalloyed lies political leaders spew on the campaign trail—such as Jack Layton’s assura...

The Conservative Party has to have two opposition days by December 10th. During these opposition days, the opposition can move a motion of non-confidence.
This was originally slated to be on December 1st with the following motion:
Mr. Dion (Saint-Laurent—Cartierville) — That, in light of the Conservatives’ failure to recognize the seriousness of Canada’s economic situation, and its failure in particular to present any credible plan to stimulate the Canad... more

The MP for West Nova says he’s disappointed with how quickly things have deteriorated in Ottawa.
Greg Kerr told The Vanguard today from his office in the nation’s capital that there is plenty of blame to go around for why the House is busy talking about who should govern and not how to help guide the country through rough economic waters.
"We’ve got a lot of very serious, serious issues facing the country," said Kerr, "and I know t... more
Everywhere we turn these days – on our televisions, in our newspapers, during three sets a night at our local airport hotel lounge – Stephen Harper is playing the piano. The man who once mocked politicians who’d sink to Giving Something of Themselves to a personality-driven media is now our country’s best hope for a half-decent weekly variety show. My fellow Canadians, I say again unto you: this tip glass isn’t going to fill itself.
In all seriousness, I’m worried that t... more

-Perhaps to the chagrin of his speechwriters, Jack Layton tends not to follow his script too closely when delivering speeches, rewriting sentences and skipping the odd bit as he goes. At one point on Saturday, the teleprompter read only, “Tell taxi driver and gas price story.”

AND ANOTHER UPDATE: Okay, I’m now officially confused, but it sounds like I may not be the only one, so that’s comforting, at least. From the comments, a statement from Robin Kers, president of COPE Local:
The statement purportedly made by the Federal Secretary of the NDP to Kady O’Malley is inaccurate. No agreement was reached “early last week” and to the best of our knowledge the hearing scheduled for September 16th has not been “called off”.

The subject heading is from one of the episodes included in Duckman: Seasons 1 & 2 , available this week. This set surprised me, because I usually expect nothing but the lamest presentation from CBS/Paramount home video (home of the bare-bones sets, flimsy packaging and rescored Fugitive episodes). But this is a really well-done set. The special features are extensive: a commentary on the pilot by Duckman voice actor Jason Alexander and Duckman creator Everett Peck (he created t... more
