Metropolis is a 1927 German silent film which was the most expensive movie ever made at that time (7 million Reichmark in 1927 which was $29.4 million in 1927 which is over $340 million in 2007 ). The movie employed 11,000 men and women extras, and 700 children extras. By today’s standards, it could be considered an epic movie.
It’s a movie about a futuristic society in which there are two classes of people: thinkers and workers. The workers built and run the city. Their entire lives revolve around keeping the machines working, even if that means dying. The thinkers plan the society. The problem is, the thinkers and the workers are so separate it is difficult for them to understand the purpose and plight of the other group. There is a peace keeper, however, among the workers named Maria who convinces them to not riot against the thinkers who control them, but wait peacefully for what she calls the Mediator who will unite the two classes together in harm...
