So Railo is going open-source .  While I think this is a ‘good thing’ I am beginning to wonder how we as a CFML community are going to keep up?  While Open Blue Dragon has their steering committee I’m wondering if we don’t need something similar for CFML in general… What is going to be considered the ‘core’ CFML tags? Where is the IDE that will handle all these different versions?  Is Adobe’s CFQuery going to be the same as OpenBD’s? I see a lot of benefit in having several choices but it’s going to all be worthless if I can’t reliably port an application from one engine to another with no changes. It’s easy to see that people are in a state of panic over the economy. With the extensive, seemingly non-stop media coverage of the recession and people discussing it at every corner, it is difficult to get the sober situation out of one’s mind. John Resig on IE8

A very nice writeup on what’s new in IE8 by John Resig (jQuery). Lots of good stuff but this one caught my eye: Firebug for Internet Explorer We finally have a heavily-Firebug-inspired tool inside Internet Explorer. To quote Joe Hewitt (creator of Firebug): “I couldn’t be happier that Microsoft completely copied Firebug for IE8.” I have to agree - a tool like this has been a long time coming and it’s greatly appreciated. Only the Internet Exp... more

I found this on Reddit and it’s pretty crazy. Phun is Master of Science Theses by Computing Science student Emil Ernerfeld. He calls it a A fun 2D physics sandbox But it’s really hard to describe. Checkout screenshots and the especially the video on the media page . I could see this being a neat education tool to explore gravity, motion, etc… I’ll certainly be installing this on the kids computer (Linux download available!) so they can tinker! I ori... more

Working for The Man we are finally cracking down on 508 compliance here. I’m curious if anyone has read any good books on the subject they could recommend? I do a lot of things for accessibility already but I’m sure I could do more. I’m also struggling with accessibility while implementing things like jQuery. I saw this post on David Harris’s blog and thought I’d mention a bit more about mind mapping. What’s a mind map? Wikipedia says : A mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks or other items linked to and arranged radially around a central key word or idea. It is used to generate, visualize, structure and classify ideas, and as an aid in study, organization, problem solving, decision making, and writing. I like to think of it as software to help yo... more
