If y’all remember the ill-fated Arby’s self-service touchscreen ordering, here’s something like it, but for expensive wine. Andrew Blum of Wired Magazine writes about a trip to Adour, a restaurant at New York’s St. Regis Hotel where ordering a glass of wine is like something out of Minority Report: Choose a type and a bottle — hand and finger movements reveal its details (grape, origin, tasting notes, cost). The info unfolds with an animated flourish out of a flower icon; think Minority Report meets Sideways. Behind the alcohol-enabling magic is a lot of technology: Cameras and object-recognition software track your hand gestures — and ignore stuff like glassware — following the motion with a trail of projected white pixel dust. And all that vino data stays safe on a dedicated Web server. Link - via AndrewBlum.net

At the beginning of November the folks over at CHUD reported on the possibility of another big screen Planet of the Apes flick. The rumored project is apparently a remake of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, which is a prequel to the first film. Over the weekend the Fox Movie Channel played all five Apes flicks back to back and during the marathon Fox’s Tom Rothman said the studio was getting closer to completing a new Apes script. Rothman said, “this one a kind of prequel story b... more

Our Earth and Moon, as seen from Mars

NASA released an image of the earth and the moon in one picture, as seen from Mars. It was taken by the HiRISE Instrument on October 3rd, 2007. On the Earth image we can make out the west coast outline of South America at lower right, although the clouds are the dominant features. These clouds are so bright, compared with the Moon, that they are saturated in the HiRISE images. In fact, the RED-filter image was almost completely saturated, the blue-green image had significant saturatio... more

Neatorama likes weird animals with strange appendages such as the two tailed lizard , the two faced swine , and even hybrids such as the octosquid .  It helps create identities for future comic superheroes in the least, not to mention the 2-for-1 deal you get when you order a meal at The Frying Dutchman. But what happens when nature works in the opposite direction? There’s definitely something at the bottom of the Blackpool sea life center in England, purporting to hou... more
