If the first part of Twitter’s summer can be summarized as “scalability,” then the second half is shaping up to be “accounting.”
Twitter recently cut SMS service in some countries (not the U.S.) after negotiations stalled with providers there. While the perceived impact was exaggerated , the pushback from that decision sees the move as a sign that the microblogging giant is now counting pennies. Naturally, the focus of criticism once again turns to how and if Twitter can make money to keep the popular service afloat.
Ben Kunz wrote about the problems with Twitter business models in today’s BusinessWeek. The problem with the article—which did have an insightful debunking of the presumed potential for all social networks to be fully connected—is that the monetization plans critiqued as solutions assume traditional forms. Banner ads. Subscription services. By the end of the article, Kunz had valued Twitter users at $12.26...

The whole setup of the 43 Best Blogs is probably worth a post all its own, but for now I’ll just thank that communal site for bringing me to The Community Guy . It is written by Jake McKee , a former community builder for LEGO now working for a Texas social media consultant. He’s got some interesting things to say on community building .
The list , of course, has yet to get enough iterations to be the list of top blogs. After all, until I corrected it, the 43 Best TV Shows...

Carter, Archie and I just spent the morning browsing an international children’s library . We searched through the books for ages 6-9 and chose a comic book about Kenyan brothers, one of whom becomes an amazing scientist, and one who becomes a successful police officer.
We used the comic as a springboard for finding Nairobi on Carter’s map, and exploring a website about the Aberdare Mountain Range .

It apparently is to be a very brief relationship with my new Mac . Problems that started pretty much when I first booted it up but flared in early August have led to a series of tech moves that has made things worse. Now, instead of only randomly powering down, I have startup problems where I get a Matrix-like screen with an increasing number of vertical lines. My because-I-have-to workaround is to zap the PRAM (p-r-alt-command) four times to get it to reboot.
