Jeff Shields at the Philadelphia Inquirer says that some of the people supporting the Boy Scouts’ fight to keep their Cradle of Liberty headquarters are getting down in the muck with their tactics . One Republican councilman is fighting back. Republican City Councilman Jack Kelly is suing a Lawncrest man for a smear campaign that Kelly says nearly cost him last year’s general election. Kelly has sued Paul D. Corbett and Corbett’s loosely-assembled group, Citizens Opposed to Politicians Who Pander to Perverts, for defamation. Kelly field suit last month in Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas, asking at least $50,000 in damages. Kelly, who is paying his own legal fees in the case, argues that fellow Republican Corbett and other members of COPPP “publicly and privately embarrassed and shamed” him by distributing fliers in church parking lots in the weeks before the November election. The fliers announced that “Councilman Kelly voted with the ho...

There are some accomplishments in the world that are as honorable now as they were at their inception, and becoming an Eagle Scout is one of them. Recently, Christopher Henry Krohn of Lewisville earned the distinguished honor from the Topsanah District, in the Longhorn Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Krohn, a 17-year-old senior at [...]... more

squashed : As you undoubtedly know, the Boy Scouts of America ban gay troop leaders. I have not heard (even unpersuasive) reasons as to why it is a good idea for a private, secular organization to have such a policy. (I’m not disputing that under the law the B.S.A. can have this policy—just that they shouldn’t.) In fact, it’s a bit surprising to me. The scouts aren’t usually so out of step with the rest of the country. Sure, some of the guys on top are a bit older and crustier—... more

Boy Scouts Find Hiker Hell

One of the blogs I read on a daily basis is Hiker Hell. B-Real has stories from around the world discussing the dangers that people experience in day hikes, mountain climbing, and simply wandering away from camp. He recently experienced the kindness of Boy Scouts after he thought he’d been subjected to the bad humor of his friends . I left my two friends under a tree and hiked about 50 yards away to find some privacy. When I returned, my friends were gone and so were their packs. My fi... more

The Girl Scouts of Manitou Council, the only council in the country to legally challenge an order from the Girl Scouts’ national body to merge with other councils, will be able to continue doing business as usual under a court ruling issued by a federal appeals court. … Attorneys for the Manitou Council had sought a preliminary injunction to block the council from having to make any changes until the case is resolved. U.S. District Judge J.P. Stadtmueller denied the request, so the ... more
A Timeless Experience

Ohio.com which seems to be a news site for the Akron Beacon Journal has a heart-warming story about a girl named Gerry Kelly who wanted to re-experience the simple pleasure of camping where she’d never had an opportunity to go before. The Girl Scouts of North East Ohio were able to make it happen. It was the girl, not the camp, that made all the difference. [T]he 95-year-old resident of Laurel Lake Retirement Community in Hudson was wise enough to share her dreams with folks who, this... more
1953 Jamboree

Chris Jepson at the O.C. History Roundup blog has a great picture from 1953 showing President Nixon addressing the Boy Scouts at the 1953 National Boy Scout Jamboree (although he was Vice-President at the time). He also relates that a short film from that event will be given by Ralph Whitford who used to be a Sea Scout leader. The picture shows those nifty 50’s Scout uniforms, but it also shows the boys and leaders crowded around Nixon’s lectern without a hint of Secret Se... more
